I've been having a lot of trouble with my left hand. It started 5 weeks ago when the base of my thumb became tight and extremely painful. Massage didn't help much and I had to take codeine for 3 days when the pain was out of control. Suddenly the pain stopped.
Now I am having similar pain in the middle of my palm and the side of my hand below my pinkie (sp?), my thumb hurts but not as bad. The pain varies from dull aching to burning, to very sharp. I can stretch my hand and have normal flexibility but when I close it to pick something up I get a very sharp pain and it feels like the muscles are cramping and locking. Tonight I tried to take a dollar bill out of my wallet and had pain so bad I screamed. I can't carry anything and driving is challenging.
I'm not getting numbness or coldness like I used to. The joints in my fingers some of the time. It is really bad during the night if I try to move my pillow.
Anyone else with this symptom. Any ideas for relief or do I just have to wait it out?

Hats,
Hand pain is nasty. That is a symptom I suffered w/ for a long time.
Hope you feel better soon. Mine went away w/ biaxin and plaquenil.
I still need to take off wedding rings because of discomfort I get when I'm tired.

Hats,
My hand pain isn't quite like this, but I had severe hand pain before my diagnosis. Most of the pain was directly caused by muscles in my upper back and shoulder area. Flexeril and myofascial release from a physical therapist is what helped initially bring it under control.
Little things that reduced the pain include:
heat - I got these mittons from Origins that have a packet you microwave. this helped mostly when it felt muscular.
Ice - I got a ice pack that has velcro so you can wrap it around. This helped when it felt like joint pain.
relaxed movement - my hands got much worse when I wore braces for a number of months. I discovered movement really helped relax them. It sounds weird, but typing helps if I am in an ergonomic position, so my neck, shoulders and wrists are perfectly relaxed. Just letting your arms hang and moving fingers may help relax.

I had a lot of hand pain and disabling pain running inside my thumbs -just horrid, they were totally paralized by the pain, like if they were broken-, it will come and go until finally went away after 2 months of levaquin.
I don't know if it was the levaquin or all the other abx I had already taken; probably was just the combination of everything.
Like Aniek mentioned I also noticed some relief after typing, I don't know what else to suggest but to hang in there, it will go away just like many other symptoms.

hats,
Here is something that may help increase the circulation to your hand and wrist. Infrared Heating Pad http://tinyurl.com/7ommn
I use it for back pain, and I am very please with it. I got one for my mother; she's been using it on her low back, and her sciatica has improved.
Just an idea. Carol

hats ~ I've been having hand and foot pain for a couple of months now. It seems worse than any other hand thing in the past.
It's was the backs of hands and tops of feet for a couple of months and now seems to be the thumb part of my left hand (less so on the right).
It seems to get better after a few days and then happens again weekly. I don't know what it is. Ice helps me slightly. But it is extremely painful; I couldn't use the left at all for about a week. It felt swollen and kind of dislocated.
I'm waiting it out and for now. I hope it resolves before making me totally crazy. the past few days it's alternating with foot pain in the same area. Grrrr...

Thanks for the replies, keep em coming. I'm glad to find out it's not just me, but sorry we're all having this pain.
Typing doesn't hurt for me either. Has anyone tried acupucture for this pain? I have a paraffin bath, has heat helped you? Does using the hand despite the pain help, or does ir need to rest?
I had various hand pains on and off for years. Maybe plaquenil & biaxin is bringing it out before eliminating it finally.

I suggest a find balance of using your hand, but not too much. I was put in braces for months and told not to use my hands. They weakened so much that any movmement or touch caused tremendous pain, and other muscles tightened to compensate.
But I never do anything that causes a sharp or pinching pain or feels like it could cause damage.

I get a lot of hand pain too, particularly in my left thumb joint. They don't swell up or anything just a pain like toothache. First thing in the morning I wake with burning hands and a sort of buzzing sensation in them. This comes and goes, I'll be OK for a few weeks and then it'll start up again. It seems to be afected by my hormone levels too, at certain times of the month it will be worse than others. I have been taking Black Cohosh recently which seems to help.

Yes to the hand/finger pains! I've had them off & on now for a couple of years, sometimes with slight swelling. Ditto for the toes and heels too. Resting seems to help along with heat packs or hot water. I gave up needle work because that made the pain so much worse. Good luck.
