To treat Babesia mepron has to be used with an antibiotic, usually Zithromax, or sometimes Ketek.

My doctor hasn't prescribed it for me...though I have had sweats. It seems to be popular here now. Is it a new regimen for babs?

No, it's not new....I was on it four years ago for babesia WA1....

It's not the only treatment protocol either....Some docs use flagyl and biaxin. After treatment failures, some try lariam....

My doc treats for babs based on symptoms as he believes that there are strains of babs that we do not test for right now. I tend to agree.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I know it needs to be used with an abx, but I was looking at my prescription coverage and wanted to see if it was on there. Thanks...

There is a pill that contains mepron & a second ingredient that is also used (but less frequently) than mepron called malarone.

You really need prescription coverage for this because a bottle of this is $1000+... if your insurance will not cover, perhaps someone can give you insight as to free or reduced price med sites.

Mom2matt, Hello I have been reading some of your posts I am not as knowledgeable as most here still pretty new but I 'm sorry you are having such a hard time now. I hope your insurance covers it if you need to buy mepron. Just picked up a new bottle and it costs 982.06 not me but that is the cost. Unbelievable to me that it really is that expensive. Good luck hope you find some answers.

I heard from one who's sone had the babs that they killed it off with zith/malatone/art - 3 cycles of 21 days on with 1 week off - on the week off still using the art - My LLMD agreed this for me seeing my initial run of only 1 cycle did not kill them of 2 months ago - Malrone is not as expensive but some don't react to it to well - I did not have to much of a problem on the single 21 day cycle. We will see what happens - so far the babs is causing most of my pain - Malaria symptoms -

Did you know that Mepron is available in individual one ounce packages.

I switched to these...so much more convenient it is crazy....carry it my pocket...take it when I need it.

Trout

PS...I tried the bottle again last month...didn't work well.

Hey there!

Sorry about all you are going through, if you have a Costco around your area check the mepron price, over here in WA it is less expensive than another pharmacies. You don't need to be a Costco member to use their pharmacy.

Another option is canadadrugs.com. Email me if you need some more info.

Take care,
Lymster
