My daughter took my Granddaughter to the pediatrician for her school physical this morning. She called me from the hospital and told me the doc detected a heart murmur which is something new for her. He sent her over to the hospital for an EKG and I don't yet know the results. My daughter did tell me that Riley has been lightheaded for the past few days, but doesn't think she has any other symptoms. Doesn't recall a rash, tick or anything amiss. I know that doesn't necessarily mean everything is okay.
My daughter and her family go camping every weekend. My daughter's husband removed a tick from the back of his neck a couple of months ago, but they just won't listen to me (you know how that goes).
I don't think I'm over-reacting, but I'm also not sure what to do here. I'll wait and see what the EKG shows (typically nothing in my experience/opinion). What would you guys advise? I'm just about going out of my mind worrying about little Riley.

Sorry for all your worries and that Riley is having some health problems right now. Maybe there is a simple explanation for why this is happening. Isn't a heart murmur something that is congenital?
Can you suddenly have a heart murmur? The lightheadedness could be quite a number of things, such as low blood sugar or sinus congestion in the head that just has not drained.
I am not trying to totally explain away her symptoms, just saying maybe it is something simple.
I remember reading your beautiful story about lyme. In fact I just shared it with my sister in law today. (I printed it off.)
Is this child the offspring of someone that was infected in your family?
I know that you are really worried, but try to hang on until they get all these test results back. Are they also checking her for diabetes (because of the dizziness)?
Has she had other symptoms, such as extreme thirst or frequent urination?
I know she is precious to you. I pray that everything works out and you get a satisfying resolution soon.

Just to east your mind while you wait , my husband and I both had heart murmurs as children. Now docs can't even detect unless we mention it and they listen really hard.
Lucky Riley to have you for a grandma!

A heart murmur was one of my first lyme symptoms. My PCP was perplexed and after an a normal echocardiogram, nothing more was done.
In hindsight, it was yet another signal that something was wrong and should've been treated.

Thanks so much everyone, your words are comforting.
Still no news from the pediatrician but I will let you know when we hear from him.
One of my symptoms of lyme was a heart murmur that came and went. I also have mitral valve prolapse. My husband's wasn't a heart murmur, but bradycardia (slow heartbeat) and vasovagal neurocardiogenic syncope (fainting when he stood up).
The pediatrician doesn't think it's diabetes and he ordered a chest x-ray (to check the size of her heart) along with the EKG. He is obviously concerned about her new heart murmur as he's been her doctor since birth.
I 'think' heart murmurs are typically congenital and when one suddenly appears, doctors start looking for a cause. I would assume there are benign heart murmurs.
Trying not to get my panties in a twirl until I hear from the pediatrician.
Yes, I believe my daughter has lyme -- I'm quite certain I contracted it when I was 5 years old. I refer to having had it for only 22 years here on lymenet because that was when I received the tick bite from the mother of cesspools.
I wish I could force my adult children to seek proper screening for lyme disease . . . but you know how that goes.
