Hubby tried Lyme specific transfer factor on recommendation of a "supposed" LLMD -- can't remember the brand off hand. For him within 5 - 30 minutes of taking the pill it triggered seizure-like episodes. He has these episodes multiple times a day anyway, but this was a consistent trigger. He continued to take this for 3 months -- after 2 months I think he stopped getting the bad reaction.
The other thing we noticed was that while his total white blood cell count remained normal the number and percent of monocytes was elevated. This only happened after he started this supplement.
The next LLMD we saw, Dr B on Long Island told hubby the transfer factor was the wrong immune booster for Lyme patients. Lyme patients tend to have some parts of their immune system underactive and other parts overactive.
The CD57 test supposedly measures a specific type of killer cell I think which is often low in Lyme patients. It is my understanding that patient test results have not been as indicative of chronic infections as originally assumed in the medical literature.
Dr B suggested a Reishi mushroom supplement from Pharmasan. This particular product contains the cracked spores and we have not been able to find a comparable product from a different manufacturer. Unfortunately it costs about $100 per month.
On the Reishi hubby's white blood cell count is overall higher (mid range rather than low normal) and the individual components are all within the normal ranges as well.
We have tried two other brands -- a cheap one and a mid price one and on those hubby's monocyte count goes back up. The Reishi is supposed to work like an adaptogen which regulates and normalizes the immune system.
Am currently trying some other herbs to see how they effect immune markers.
I am not a doctor but am just reporting hubby's experiences which may not be the same for everyone.
