Hi everyone, just wanted to know if anyone had tried the five day on and five day off thing with zithromax.Take it for 5 days and take 5 days off? Apparently my LLMD belives this is the best because zithro stays in the system for a long time. But wouldn't the bacteria develop some degree of resistance? Just wanted to know your thoughts. I'm on zithro 1000 mg daily and that's it. I take it every day 2 weeks now and find it's the best drug yet for me. I don't think taking a lower dose of 5oomg daily and pulsing it would be as eefctive, just my opinion.

I'm not good with Zith but, I have a friend who pulses it. She takes it for about 3 days when she feels symptomatic and then stops, does it again about a week or 2 later. She says it has maintained her for over a year.

I prefer ketek, the next generation of zithromax. Since I'm dealing with both Lyme and co-infections, I've never seen ketek's effect on Lyme alone, but there are many promising reports.

That's a very good question. I've been doing the same thing as your friend, but with Biaxin, a macrolide, like zithromax. I can't seem to get past 2-3 days of it without skipping a day due to symptoms.
I hope this one day break every few days does not allow them to build up resistance, but I really don't know.
Macrolides like zith and biaxin supposedly build up in the tissues, so maybe short breaks won't matter. Not sure how many days is acceptable, if any.....

Hi tHANKS FOR YOUR REPLIES. I never knew that biaxin and ketek were pulsed as well, I never did this and it raises some questions for my LLMd. Zithro is the first drug that's making me feel a real improvement. 1000 mg a day each day and it's a miracle. I think we should just suck it up and not take any breaks, that's just my opinion. The chronics atleast, because if we don't hit it hard then how will we ever be functional?Apparently they do in fact stay in the tissues for a while but I'd rather not take any risks. Do LLMD's do the whole pulsing thing for chronics so that they will be able to peacefully live with lyme? When do they do the pulsing, in cases that are difficult ? As for the ketek Liz, I agree it does have some interetsing properties. it works great for neurological type symptoms and did help a great deal with my thinking. I was on it for 4 months and biaxin for 9 months. Zithro just seems to fully cover all areas for me but we're all different and just have to experiment untill we find the right drug. thanks again L
