Ever since I was diagnosed with Lyme (over a month ago) I've had a "heightened" sense of smell. Now it's getting so I can stand certain odors - especially if it's anything like BO or sweat. I have to go in the safe sometimes at work and it smells like "sweaty money" and I sometimes step on the staff elevator after someone with a personal hygiene problem has used it and I can still smell the BO. My PMD saw a small polyp in up my left nasal passage but said that I just need some steriod spray to clear it up. (I wouldn't have agreed to surgery anyway.) But that should be making it harder to smell things not easier. Does anyone else have this issue?

Oh yes,I had this.I also had to deal with the hallucinations for awhile too.So did my poor husband.

You see I could smell a dead rat and knew for sure there was one under the house. He would check and check and no clue, until I read this is common with Lyme.I also read of someone else having the exact same problem with the same rat as myself.Boy,thought I was going bonkers there for awhile and the family was ready to tuck me away, but I towed the line too much.HA!

With time,it cleared,so,besides wearing a mask,I don't know, maybe spray a nice mist on the arm and take in a few wiffs now and then as needed.

NJ,

Yes, I've had heightened sensitivities to smells for 20+ years, and 30-36 years to LIGHTS & NOISE/SOUNDS!

I couldn't go to the grocery store for 6+ years; just started going 6 months ago again but not when store is FULL!

It's a royal pain in the butt since we need to have CONTROL over our environment and that makes other co-workers/family unhappy about what they have to give up to make us happy. Good luck.

Got terrible MCS- multiple chemical sensitivity where I would vomit and turn pake and sweat and get wsick from strong chemical smells but ANY smell could suddenly become very strong and sickening. Sucked.
Totally gone now. Thank god. I never believed in that kind of thing pre-getting it. I am so glad it's gone!!!!! Longterm antibiotics*)!)*!

Yes sentitive to smells, sounds, & sunlight.

Most of these are pretty much cleared up since taking antibiotics since January.

I don't feel like pucking anymore when I smell my mother in laws musty perfume.

I don't need to wear sunglasses on a rainy day.

I am back to listening to rock music loud.

Don't worry there is hope and you are not crazy.

Heather

The first smell I noticed being overly sensitive to was car exhaust.

I also thought I smelled mice in the kitchen(didn't think they were dead, though). Never saw any -- now I know why.

I'm also very senstive to perfumes, scented candles, household cleaning products, the auto supply aisles of WalMart, etc.

My husband insists I have the sense of smell of a Cocker Spaniel!

I noticed the sound sensitivity/ringing in ears thing after I got out of the hospital, it looks like the smell thing is part of the same thing - some days are worse than others. I'm going to get some OUST or neutralizing deodorant for the elevator. As for the safe - I'll get a box of baking soda. You wouldn't believe how bad money smells.

I have a horrible sensitivity to smell. It's gotten worse since I've started taking the abx. I used to be a big fan of fish -- would eat it several times a week at least.
Now, I can't stand to have it cooking, and I can't eat it because of the smell.

I have some of this with sound, too. But the smell is the worst.

I'm glad to hear it dissipates in time.

My sense of smell was turned way up for most of my life. It turned back down to a normal level several months into treatment.

When walking down the Street I could smell which buildings had been exterminated, I could smell who had come into my office hours before by the perfume lingering at the front door. I wouls smell smoke long before anyone else or the alarm did.

My ears were turned up too and I was sensitive to light.
