I don't know why this is happening.

I began having severe intestinal pains this evening. I thought I'd have diarrhea. Sorry for this detail. I did have a movement, but the only reason I didn't have diarrhea, I think, is because I'm taking a constipating medicine.

It has continued unabated.

I'm so confused: I just started good treatment (after many setbacks), and I wonder if it's a medicine. Then, I wonder if Bart causes this. I'm treating for Bart and Lyme. I wonder if it's a herx for Bart and/or Lyme. I wonder if it's the probiotics. I wonder if it's the yogurt I ate earlier with aspartame and added fructose. I don't have issues with aspartame, and I rarely use it. Maybe it's the added fructose.

I think it would have cleared up by now, though. I had that yogurt hours ago.

I don't know what to do. I cannot go to sleep. My stomach is killing me now, too. [Frown]

I guess I'm hoping someone might have guidance.

All the best, Steph

Star,

Does it feel like a huge cramping feeling like you are going to explode and then it goes away for a while and then comes back in a few minutes or so? This was one of my first Lyme symptoms.

The only way I could get relief was to force a bowel movement. The best and quickest way to get relief from this is milk of magnesia, but be prepared to be on the stool often tonight. I can't remember the dosages, I think you can take up to 4 tblspns, but it WILL make your bowels move.

I feel for you. Been there. [Frown]

jloisu: It's constant. It's both a feeling of pain and cramping.

I wish I had the Milk of Magnesia. I'd be afraid to take it, though, with all the meds. I don't know about interactions. I take something like 35 pills.

If it is still with me in the morning, er, when the sun comes up, I think I'll call my PA's office.

Thanks! I'm sorry you've suffered with this.

This is the story of my daily life. I had IBS before I knew I had Lyme but, abx has made the problem 10x worse. I get cramps all night long and wake up feeling quite ill.

Gastro MD has me taking Donnatal at night now. It only lasts about 5 hours though. I've tried Bentyl but, that really makes me sleepy.

Don't know what to tell you, other than to go to the bathroom. It will help you to feel better temporarily.

If you are on or have been on abx for a while and you are having severe cramping and diarrhea, you should be tested for c. diff. also if that is the problem, taking anti-diarrheal drugs is the worst thing you can do.

Yes, if you have been on abx. getting checked for c. diff. is a must. Flagyl is the med they prescribe to treat C. diff. so that ties the two together.

Sorry I don't have more advice. The GI's tried all the meds on me. Bentyl (anti cramping), hyocyamine (anti cramping), but none helped because my problem was yeast. I wouldn't take Donnatal because it has Phenabarbatol in it...a barbituate, but it may be worth a shot...sounds like it helped beachcomber.

Thank you, all you wonderful people!

I failed to check the "Email Notification" box when I posted, so I had no idea anyone else had answered me after jloisu's first message!

It's not C.diff, but that was a good guess! [Smile] I had just started treatment on Sunday after a long period with none (and having had very little, ineffectual treatment before that!). I'm glad it wasn't C.diff. If Flagyl is the treatment, I'd be a'poopin' still! I'm allergic to it.

I appreciate all of your caring input.

It was part of a Herx. After the cramping, I had deeper pain. It felt like it was the musculature. Then, it felt like nerve pain. It lasted for hours. When I finally got to bed, I slept a little, and then I awoke with the worst pain (muscle/bone/joint) of my life! I was bedridden until noon. The pain continued at a sufficient level, and it's still with me. I've had lots of neuropsychiatric and cognitive symptoms, too. They began first, and they are continuing.

I tried my office's lemon therapy for alkalizing, but it did bubkes. Nothing. My PA called back and said I have to go super slow with meds now. I have to start with 100 of doxy and increase every few days to 400. I have to add in the Cipro and Plaquenil slowly, too. I thought I WAS going slowly. I was taking 200 doxy per day, one Cipro, and one Plaquenil.

I think it was the Bart.

When I left my message, I reminded the staff that I've been sick for 20 years. That's a whole lotta germies!

It's hard to be patient sometimes. I have been through the mill these two decades, and I want to just take the whole bottles of meds, figuratively, to get better already!

All the best, Steph

P.S. I was taking six Nystatin per day, too. I may have a yeast load also. (I was taking it for prevention.) I'm going to just take two and increase like the rest.

P.P.S. I'm glad that when you edit now, you don't see the message afterwards, saying you edited. I edited this one so much 'cuz I kept finding errors!

It could have been a yeast herx, or a muscular reaction to a Lyme herx. It could also have been the bug from a gastrointestinal infection causing a herx.

And gastro infections can also cause reactive arthritis. So, it might be the right, although painful, path to treatment.

Aniek: I've had some of the same thoughts. Thanks for your validation.

I was told to ramp up on meds slowly due to the high germ load.

Glad you figured it out.

Just wanted folks to know that after two years of abx for lyme I developed gluten intolerance. When I eat it I get very very bad pain.

On a paleolithic type diet I do much better at this time.

Also, remember to drink lots of water!
