I have noticed over the last few months since this whole illness started that I am constantly hungry. I always loved to eat but could at least control the hunger spells before. Is anyone else having this problem? I am about 5' 3" and 128 lbs right now so I am not overweight by any means...but I am on the road to pudginess and can't seem to stop it! I already am having a hard time fitting into most of my clothes.

I know some gain weight with lyme, some lose...
I have gained about 5 lbs so far - maybe even more since i actually lost a lot of muscle tone...

I can't seem to exercise - because I am tired number one - and number two it makes my symptoms worse and I am afraid to attempt it again.

What kinds of food are the best to eat with lyme - can it slow your metabolism??

Thanks.

Oh yeah, for sure!

When my symptoms started, I was an eating machine. I had to eat all the time. Eat eat eat. Gradually, I started gravitating towards worse and worse foods...McDonalds, sugars, fats, etc.

I think I have personally broken whatever record anyone had for eating Kit-Kats. I gradually gained weight until I had packed on about 60 pounds in the space of just over a year. SO fun.

I think a good part of this particular symptom was good old candida. Especially with the sugar cravings.

At present, I have barely any appetite at all, and I noticed that as soon as I started an anti candida diet my sugar cravings stopped almost completely. Now, especially if I make sure to drink my superfood drink in the mornings, I just don't crave sugar or any heavy foods.

So you may want to look into a candida diet.

Cheers,

Alison

Yep, sure could be! I had candida before I even began treatment with abx. My immune system was shot full of holes by years and years of untreated Lyme.

Check this out, crazy! [Smile]

Sure, I was always hungry even just after eating a huge meal I could eat some more. Abx, exercise and cutting out sweets has helped me my hunger is not out of control anymore.

Thanks everyone! Like I said, I always ate a lot before and actually am teased by most of my friends for my eating habits - but I have definitely noticed I just never feel full now and am constantly in the fridge. At first, I thought it was from being out of work for two and a half weeks (with a supposed inner ear infection) and not really being able to go anywhere - depression - not being able to exercise - etc...

But now three months later, I am still constantly hungry and noticed it really is my appetite itself - although the other things probably contribute as well.

And once I let myself have something sweet like ice cream, there is just no stopping me. It's like it is feeding this craving inside me that never goes away - but once I am done eating the junk I feel so bad and feel like I have gained another pound instantly.

I have always loved chocolate and things of that nature - but I actually am a really healthy eater. Yogurt for breakfast everyday for almost a year now with granola and sometimes almonds in it - mostly salads for lunch and normal dinners too. But I have really fell of the wagon here and just can't seem to get it together with the cravings! I posted another thread about candida questions - but no one has responded yet. How do you know if you have candida?? If you are a female, can you have it even if you don't have a vaginal infection? Because I don't have one but feel that I still have serious yeast problems - gas, bloating, sugar cravings, etc....

Anyone know?

Also, I know with lyme you shouldn't have sugar, but can you have natural sugars in fruit? I eat tons of fruit and don't know if I could give that up.

Hey, I just thought of another thing that should have occurred to me earlier but didn't due to my foggy Lyme brain. This could also be a symptom of intestinal parasites.

There are so many different kinds, it's estimated that between 85-90 percent of people have them, they can cause large and also odd food cravings. You aren't by any chance craving burnt or barbecued things, are you? That's just one of the cravings they cause but there are many.

Often when you feel this overwhelming compulsion to eat, and need to eat a lot, this can be a sign. For example tapeworms can cause this (Eeewwww, I know). And it's just like you said - the urges to eat, the appetite -- it's almost uncontrollable.

I've been through this myself and I have actually passed some parasites and actually seen them after doing cleansing. If you're interested in an anti-parasite cleanse, let me know.

As for your other questions...I have never had a vaginal yeast infection, even though I'm sure I have candida. Forgive me if I forgot if I asked this before, but have you done the spit test for candida? Have you taken the candida questionnaire? These all helped me a lot. I never took a test.

As far as the fruit thing goes, and I am definitely not an expert, I have heard that some fruits are ok if used minimally. If you like, I can e-mail you the 3-stage candida list of good and not allowed foods.

Like, off the top of my head I know that it says that grapefruit good, bananas bad. And I also think that you can gradually add stuff back after awhile if it doesn't affect you adversely.

Also, whilr I think of it, gas, bloating, etc. are also all symptoms of parasitic infection. Yay, another thing to have to deal with . . .

But it IS possible to deal with, I promise. [Smile]

Alison

Most fruit is NOT OK when you're on abx. And yes, you can have systemic yeast and not have vaginal yeast.

Read the links above.

Yes ever since austin started treatment he is hungry all the time. In the beginning it was bad. He would eat a big meal and still be hungry.

Atleast now I know that he is not the only one.

I put tons of weight on before I figured out I had LD. Once I started treatment I completely lost my appetite. I still have to force myself to eat. Not sure which is worse.

My stomach used to growl NON-STOP even when I was full. In my case it is due to excess stomach acid (an exacerbation caused by the little lyme bugs). Since I have been on tx it has been better, and I have been able to control it with supplements (Zinlori-a miracle supplement). Otherwise you might want to just try some OTC acid reducers and see if this helps. IMO Rolaids and Tums are useless. Try Prilosec OTC or something similar, or you might want to ask your doc for a prescription proton pump inhibitor. Good luck!
