A vehement yes to your query -> I had csf positive meningitis twice, about 4 years apart. Both times I was initially treated with orals to no avail. Both times I was subsequently treated with IV (different ones each time) and, after re-learning how to read the first time and re-learning how to walk the second went on to get my PhD. Orals 0, IV 2.

I saw a doctor at Columbia Univ. Medical Center for my lyme evaluation. He recommended IV antibiotics, for the lyme had affected my CNS.

I did orals for 2 months while trying to get the picc line arranged and my insurance to cover it.

I was 15 weeks into the IV (also added Ketek at week 6) before I noticed improvement (read: while I didn't feel normal, at least normal was on the horizon!)

I hope to keep my IV in for at least another 4 weeks, and then see from there.

IVs have their place in treatment for sure!

IV Rocephin has been a life saver for me.

Yes, definitely.

My sx are mostly all neuro and I felt sooo horrible on orals - IV Rocephin was the first treatment to help a bit. It took a while to start helping though. I stayed on 4 mos and would have stayed on longer but lost insurance.

I definitely got worse when I stopped it, but it did help a few of my neuro symptoms which I felt it was worth it.

But it's been criticized for pushing the keets deeper into cyst form, so be sure to talk to your dr about adding in an oral cyst-buster WITH the Rocephin...or at least some treatment that helps prevent the cyst form. I used tinidazole which I tolerated pretty well.

Hang in there.

Yes for me too. Think the terrific low back problems were neuro in origin. Was on orals for a long time while it just got worse and worse, to the point that I couldn't sit for more than ten minutes. Was awful having to make long car trips to doc. Meanwhile my brain was doing better as were some other symptoms. Odd isn't it?

But IV turned this around, and not just any IV. Seemed to me that, just as in orals, finding the right one for your particular bug and symptoms is the key.

My daughter was on orals for 14 months and did not show a noticable improvement. But after 2 months on IV Rocephin her activity started to improve, her headaches and muscle pain decreased, and she is on a slow trend of steady but very slow improvement. We are still hoping...that this will continue. She has had to switch from Rocephin to IV claforan so hoping it coninues to improve.

My LLMD RXed IV Claforan. Hope that does as well as the rocephin.

I thought PICC lineswere only good for 4-6 weeks. What kind of port did you all have for longer term abx IV? Thanks.

I have decided to stay on the clindamycin/quinine and malarone for a few weeks before going IV to try to target babesia. I dd zith.mepron and it was horrilble and stopped after 5 or 6 weeks. The IV Claforan doesn't target babesia, does it? What infections does it target?

Also thanks for the tinnazole? suggestion.

Jordan's PICC line was placed on 5/19. He is on Primaxin which is infused 3/day. He also has his blood draws from the line. His home health nurse said one of her clients has had the same PICC for 14 months so far.

My kids take good care of their lines. Jacob had his moved from his right arm to his left arm 3 weeks ago because there was a clog at the end of the tubing.
