HI there- my best advice would be to use the 'search' on this- lots of info. people have posted. I read & re-read before I started Flagyl.
I cannot say how you will react. I am also on Ketek & minocycline. 500 is not a huge amount, but it just depends on your bb type & all that jazz. I hardly herxed at 750- but when I ramped up to where i am now I am getting hit big time.
My symptoms are fluish on Flagyl(achy all over) & it makes all my other Lyme symptoms (which is all nerve pain) worse as well. Basically, it is nasty. However, YA GOTTA BELIEVE YOU ARE KILLING THE CYSTS & it will be worth it in the long term.
I waited until much too long into my treatment to begin Flagyl, sounds like you are doing it sooner rather than later & that is good IMO.
I would recommend trying 1/2 of whatever the doc. told you to take for a day or two first to see how it goes.
I currently am taking a lot of Flagyl & herxing badly- but I am taking a very high dose (1500) per day & only wiegh about 110. Also, I believe cysts are a real prob. for me.
No, I cannot work full time & when I am herxing on it I am in bed a lot.
But don't be scared, not to address the cysts would be worse.
I will think of you tomorrow :}.

It tastes awful! My LLMD told me to dip it in yogurt or olive oil to make it go down, yuck!

Everyone is different, however most Lyme patients experience strong herx reactions to Flagyl. You may feel worse, you may not. Just be prepared in case it gets bad. I t sure helped me alot.

Hi there,
I only used to take Flagyl one week out of the month.
I was on really high doses of orals. Flagyl was 1000 mg. for me along with the others.
I tell you, stay by the bathroom!! Boy, I sure had some intestinal problems with this.
Also, for me, any herxing seemed to intensify during that week.
Anyways, on to IV's for me and instead of Flagyl will be taking Tinadazole?sp. along with whatever.
Hang in there!!

I just looked at my bottle and realized that I am takiong 500mg 3 times a day so that's 1500mg per day. I am pretty petite 5'2 110lbs-what should i be most worried about? I work as a nanny for a 20 month old-if i did herx when would I start to feel symptoms? Thanks for all your advice!

I took flagyl and zithromax together everday for 10 months straight. I didn't really have bad herxes. I did however develop peripheral neuropathy in my feet the last three months. It has since cleared up.
I believe the flagyl really helped me a lot.
Good luck.

I've been treating neuro Lyme for 4 months. Had actually had a pretty decent month last month and was nearly ready to pronounce myself "all better!" Then my LLMD added Flagyl. YUCK. I guess that's why they call them LLMD's. I am back in headache city.
I am on 250 mgs, 3x per day (I weigh about 130).
My doc assures me this is much less than he COULD be giving me so he is going easy on me as he knows the propensity of my head for exploding.
In just a little over a week, some days I am having to skip the third dose as my head pain/pressure is over the top.
Hoping it will get a bit better soon.
I know it's a GOOD THING.
YES, I can still work, albeit in a kind of mumbling fashion late in the day, and sometimes with the aid of prescription migraine meds. Hopefully you will be able to work as well. I don't think it will "strike you down" or anything so dramatic, it will likely just exacerbate your worst Lyme symptoms, at least initially.
Good luck Flagyl-lating, Lindsay!

hey smiles...
The first time I was given flagyl it was 250 three times a day...I already had the neurapathy so I did'nt get it from the flagyl...but it can happen...but will clear up after you stop it...
1500 sounds like a lot...I have gone as high as 500 twice a day pulseing on weekends...it does taste nasty... I did'nt herx bad from it but something I did experience which can come with flagyl is lethargy...something that was'nt addressed in earlier posts...be mindful of that.....
maybe my chete or cyst load was lower when I took it or maybe my system handles it better than some...hard to predict what will happen to you....
Definitely stay away from any alcohol while you're on it or you'll get really really sick..it has an anti alcohol characteristic to it...like that stuff they give alcoholics to make them sick when they drink....
Good luck and yes you might get a headache with it too.....don't know why but I did....zman

I've taken a lot of different abx, and flagyl hit me the worst with yeast. Take a lot of probiotics and stick to candida diet.
Flagyl gave me oral thrush, so I gargled and rinsed my mouth with 1:1 ratio of hydrogen peroxide/water a couple of times a day. Obviously don't swallow.
And definitely stay away from alcohol. I took flagyl in February and had a small drink on Valentine's Day and almost passed out at the restaurant!
Good luck!

I started taking flagyl about 8 weeks ago. I take 250mg @ 3 times a day. (along with a few other meds).
The first week I experienced feeling very tired and flu-like symptoms. Every bone in my body was aching and I had bad headaches. I refused to stop the medicine and stuck it out.
The results actually turned out well. My brain fog and "drunk" feeling started to ease. I also have seen an improvement with my balance. Mentally it helped me a lot. I found it to be easy on my stomach compared to the other antibiotics I've taken over the last year.
I hope this is the drug that will help. Good luck to you and try to stick with it. I was scared at first but now I feel a little better. Hopefully you will too.

Well thanks everyone for sharing your personal experiences!
I have been on flagyl 1500mg for two days now and I am starting my third. The meds make me so tired and nautious. Although last night as exhausted as I was I couldn't sleep-Maybe due to how nautious I was? I vommited for 8 monthes straight before I was diganoised with lyme. Literally everytime I drank water, ate food, road in car etc. I haven't thrown up yet, but I don't know how much longer I can keep fighting this feeling. I also had virtigo before I am noticing that my head is spinning. I don't know if this means I am just adjusting to the meds or herxing or what. I do know that it could be a lot worse but the thought of starting to vommit again makes me sad.
I do have some questions directed towards members who posted. A lot of you mention neurotherapy-What is that? Why would I get it? Why is it so bad to have?
What is lethargy? Do you mean lethargic?-cause I know what that means-
thanks everyone! Lindsay

Another thing, I believe flagyl has been associated with depression. So watch out for it.
