I started flagyl today I am taking 1500mg plus 800mg of minicycline plus 1000mg of valtrex. I am in my 4th month of treatment. I am believed to have had lyme since the age of 12 and I am now 21. As well I was treated for immune problems with pretnisone for over a year. Needless to say I am in a very advanced stage of lyme disease at this point. I haven't really noticed ne side effects yet from the flagyl besides dizziness and being naucious-although it is my first day.

I know there is a big concern with alcohol-even vanilla extract. Does anyone have in depth info on this? I have read all the phamlets as well as info on this website and I talked to a farmacist. However, there hasn't been to much info I could find-it's all pretty standard. If you have a personal experience with flagyl or know where i can find in depth info on this drug please let me know.

I would also like to find out what the long term effects of being on this drug is/are?

Thanks for all your time!
Lindsay

Hey girl, guess who?

Flagyl long term is known to cause neuropathy. That is why usually they will not leave you on it indefinately. Maybe pulse therapy, like a week on, a week or or something like that. They may keep you on it longer, but from what I understand you will have to take a break from it.

As you know it caused major neuro problems for me. I now use a similar med (same class - little more expensive (not really w/insurance), but less side effects) called tinidazole. Still can't use alcohol at all. I only take it Friday-Sunday.

The first time I took Flagyl the pharmacist told me not even to rinse w/Listerine (has alcohol in it) while on Flagyl. May be overkill, but better to be safe than sorry. I will post a link to Dr. B's guidelines about it too here in a sec. email me when you get a chance and keep you chin up. Others will chime in here soon with some more answers!

I've been in treatment with a top llmd for 2.5 years (since being dx with lyme). For 10 months straight I was on zithromax and flagyl combo. (I was on other abx before and after).

During this time he checked my liver enzymes often and thankfully I never had a problem. I made significant progress on this combo however I did get neuropathy in my feet the last three months.

The neuropathy is no longer an issue for me as it has resolved but it took a few months. I had drops of alcohol in vanilla extract once and homeopathic remedy a second time and had a terrible reaction both times while on the flagyl.

After these two incidents, I made sure I stayed away from alcohol even in the tiniest bit.

I think flagyl can cause depression. Something to keep an eye on.

Best wishes.

You THINK it can cause depression!!?? [Big Grin] That is a big understatement, if you ask me! Definitely "keep an eye on it"!!!!!

Have you tried this site for info?
Drug information:

If you do alcohol while on this drug, you'll pay for it.
