Several weeks ago I had what I thought was a pimple on the back of my earlobe. It got larger-was painful to touch-then broke open. It took a long time to heal. Now, I have multiple hot, red lumps on the backs of my lower legs. I am scared to death these will break open too. My LLMD suggested a dermotologist, but the sores are deep. I am on Biaxin and Minocycline. Can anyone help??

Thanks for being there--hatterasbit

Hi Hat,
I have no idea what they are but I have the same thing now, for at least 4 months, on my shins and inside one elbow. They get very hot, break open, weep and drip, dry out, go back to a flat sore. Then the process begins again. Usually a 2 week cycle, could be a bit over a week.

I have no idea but they itch, burn and when they do break, it is because I can't stand it any more and scratch them. Doesn't take much.

So I can't help you with what they are, hopefully someone else can tell us. I just wanted to say, I'm with you on this one.

There was a recent post, sorry don't remember the topic name, about cysts caused by a coinfection. There was a picture of one behind a knee that was pretty big.

Also it may be lymph node congestion. Lymph can get blocked by chronic illness.

Just some things to think about.

Thanks for all the replies.

A local surgeon took a look at them and ordered an ultrasound to rule out phlebitis and DVT. It was normal. He then took a punch biopsy. The preliminary report finds some type of infectious organisms between the skin and muscle. The sample has been sent to OSU for further testing.

The knots were about 1/2" on average, hot, painful to touch, and a reddish/purple color. They have now clustered together.

I will let you know the outcome.

if they don't find anything- check out bartonella.

Bart is hard to test for and I think it may also be hard to culture.

Hi All--

The pathology report is back from OSU on the biopsy of the knots on my legs. It is Erythema nodosum chronicum. It is The infiltrate within the subcutis is composed of granulomas, lymphocytes, and eosinophils.

This specimen is characteristic for 1] drug hypersensitivity; 2] coccidioidomycosis; 3[ underlying Hodgkin's Disease.

Miocin is one of the antimicrobial drugs that can cause this. I stopped taking it for now. So sad, because after 3 years- I had my 1st hrex. after starting it.

LYME DISEASE SUX!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the update, Hat.

Am waiting (AND waiting) for a dermatology appointment...have a feeling mine will be the same diagnosis. I am on ketek/flagyl...dont know if they are in the same class of antibiotics as minocin.

Did they give you a drug and/or salve to put on it or to take? My LLMD gave me a fungal ppill, one per week Gen-Fluconazole), and a fungal salve Ketoconazole). My family Dr. didn';t think it was fungal, thus the LONG wait for a dermatology appt.

I will post when I get a reply. Meanwhile, any suggestions on salve/pills, or whatnot??

Hi Island,

I found some info on the net about the disease. No one knows what causes it to happen; it happens to women more than men; it will turn a purple shade [that's where I am]; the knots will flatten out into flat, brown patches [how attractive!]; and can recur. The only treatment I found is using hot or cold compresses for the pain. It sounds like another waiting game to me. I will try to find out more.

Gosh, I'm glad it isn't shorts weather!!!!

Have a great day---hatterasbit

I think these are toxins which are caused by the meds killing the ketes. The toxins are trying to get out of your body anyway possible, through skin, eyes, sweat, anything.

I get these all the time and treat them with antibiotic creme and they eventually clear up but will come back some other place. The toxins even come out of my eyes; they water and feeling cold and weird and I get blisters inside my mouth that pop. I swish with hydrogen peroxide for that.

Gosh we are an attractive bunch.
