I am having trouble getting any pain relief. I am from Australia so we dont have everything as in the US and things have different names so I will use the active ingredients so people know what Im talking about.
I have been taking a drug called Mersyndol forte for the past 4 years which is a combination of codine and paracetamol (tylenol) but its not doing anything now.
I react to so many drugs and those I dont react to I seem to build up a tolerance so they dont work anymore. I have tried the fentanyl patch and I had a major allergic reaction to that. I was also on neurontin for a while and it helped a bit but i piled on the weight so I had to stop it. Nonen of the antidepressants seem to do anything for me either.
I have tried pretty much any of the muscle relaxants we could think of and they dont work anymore either except vallium which works great but makes me crazy - it seems to change me into a different person and I dont seem to have much control of my behaviour.
I cant seem to come up with anything else that is available in Australia that I can take. Out of the stronger so called 'addictive' ones we only have oxycodone and morphine. I dont want to take morphine because I have seen it in use and dont like what ive seen but I have been reading alot of your posts about oxy and also reading about it and I think it might help but my doctor is really against those stronger pain killers - the 'addictive' ones and he wont even consider them.
I am in so much pain and I am probably about to start iv abx so its only going to get worse and I just cant take it anymore.
Has anyone got any ideas either about other pain relief to try or how to convince my doc to try the oxy?
Thanks'
ozcat

Hey Oz,

There's several things you can try, unfortunately, lymies don't seem to have a lot of success with prescription pain relievers. You may want to try tramadol, that seemed to help my son somewhat.

Take a hot bath in epsom salts, sip squeezed lemons, jacuzzi's, sauna's. Many here claim Mangosteen juice helped their pain immensely. Do a net search for "Podi Patches", many have gotten relief with these. Take lot's of magnesium as lymies lack this mineral, and the mags can help ease the joint pain.

It's really trial and error with most lymies to get relief. Try various things until you find something that helps. Ultimately, being treated properly with abx is your ticket to getting pain free.

Hi,

Sorry to hear that you are dealing with persistant pain. It's so hard.

My son takes a combination of nuerotin and Trazadone for muscle aches. The nuerotin is sometimes prescribed for seizures. He had constant aches and severe aches that would strike a certain place. Constant joint stiffness. Daily life much more bearable with the meds.

My daughter takes trazadone for muscle stiffness and sleep. She tried voltaren for muscle soreness (illeo sacral) It almost completely relieved the pain; but we had to discontinue because of side effects.

For some reason, ibuprophen helped me more with joint pain than tylenol. My son's dr said we could go up to 800mg 3times a day. My son and I are just now decreasing to more like 1200mg a day or less.

The dr also said that we can alternate tylenol and ibuprophen. Take 8hr strength tylenol, then give ibuprophen 4hrs later, then tylenol, then the ibuprophen. I do it this way now because the pain is not as severe and if I miss the ibuprophen dose we are still somewhat covered.

When pain was cranking, I learned to never miss a dose and also get it in on time before pain would break thru. Sort of had to get ahead of it. I guess this is really basic, but it takes a ton of discipline for me anyway to be viligant even when we feel temporarily better.

We are getting much better on the antibiotics.

Best Wishes,
Susan
