Hi, for those of you that suffer from cramps and twitches, are they aggravated by exercise? And are they constant or random?
Thanks...

People always say that twitches are caused by magnesium deficiency.

Hi Kenny. I have them all the time. Tremors pretty bad too sometimes. It seems pretty random to me. I can be walking on my treadmill or just sitting on the couch. I have found that Magnesium does help. My LLMD has me taking 4 a day. I still have the twitches, cramps and tremors but just doesn't seem as bad. Hope something works for you.

I didn't really get many twitches.. Just muscle cramps so bad they would look like lumps.

Even mild exercise - slow walk on treadmill for 30 minutes - would leave my leg muscles twitching for 20 minutes or so. I always thought this very strange. [confused]

Now that I've restored my magnesium levels to normal levels by IM injections and IV, it doesn't happen any more. So it's either a huge coincidence, or that was the real problem.

Hi Ken,

Yes.

My son would have it worse the next day after exercising now that he even wants to try. Discouraging to ride bike, then pay.

It is getting better on antibiotics!

He was so bad at the beginning of therapy that he would crawl to get to another room or try to roll with the desk chair. Pretty disturbing for mom, but he is a little quirky and thought is was sort of funny most of the time.

Everything is getting better! Slow but sure--Hang in there.

Dr. Burrasco's guidelines contain a section on how to recondition.

Susan

HI, Thanks Lyme-suz. I hope your son turns around completely and quickly. Actually, I am fit and relatively healthy. I cycle 2 - 3 times per week for 1 hour to 90 minutes. The twitches started up a month or so ago and have progressed into some cramping/burning sensations in the one arm. So far just twitches popping around into myriad other locations. It was from researching those symptoms and stumblimg on Lyme that I discovered I had a host of other possible neuro/late-stage Lyme symptoms. The challenge is that many if not all Lyme symptoms can come from other things as well. It comes back to that clinical diagnosis thing.

So reconditioning is not really relevant to me at this point. It's more about getting a firm Lyme diagnosis and ruling out ALS. I'm dumping my (idiot) neurologist and getting another one this week on the recommendation from an MD friend. I have my first appointment with an LLMD on 10/25. Needless to say I am anxious.

Having been diagnosed with and treated for Lyme 5 times (most recently last October) would lead one to believe that late-stage Lyme is most likely the case. However there are no guarantees, and my grandfather did die from ALS, so I need to pursue all routes with due diligence until I figure it out.

Oh, and my question was based on the fact that after I cycle (which I do pretty strenuously) for several hours afterward my twitches are much more frequent.

As always, thank you for your input.
Peace...

Kenny, I just spent about a half hour responding to your private message, and it did not go through, and I cannot get that screen back, so I wanted you to know that I did respond, but lymenet lost it (grrrrr).

I'm new to the private messaging thing here on lymenet, and the only time I sent one before, it went through, so I don't know what I did wrong this time to cause it to be lost.

But, I cannot retype it right now, so just wanted you to know that I received yours, as an email to my AOL email address, and I will keep your pm as "new" and try to say it all again some time later this week, so sorry it got lost~

I believe part of it is the release of toxins from exercise. Try drinking plenty of water after exercise, to help flush the system. Keeping fully hydrated should also help prevent the cramps.

I had mycoclonus for a while, which is uncontrollable movement and jerks. I stopped cardio exercise because it really aggravated it.

You may also have a mineral deficiency. Both twitching and cramping is a sign of magnesium deficiency. I have also heard calcium can help. But you take the calcium and magnesium at seperate times.

Well, I learn something new every time I come here. My hubby does the twitching thing, when he's sleeping. His arms and hands visibly twitch a lot, I didn't realize that was a magnesium thing.

The LLMD did mention he might be low on magnesium when we went to see him.

God Bless your son, Suz.

Hi Kenny,
It's your twin symptom girl. My symptoms have really subsided -I still twitch but nothing like this summer. And yes yes yes they were definitely worse when I exercised. I had it nailed down to either the muscle exertion or my body temperature going way up because it was usually pretty hot here in Wisconsin when I excercised this summer. I would rollerblade hard for an hour (we have awesome paved trails that used to be railroad tracks -like 50 miles of them) for 10 miles in 90 degree weather. You want to see twitching! and shooting pain! Plus my friend Bill had lyme disease -he is no help, had it years ago and can't remember anything about it. But I remember that he would never go in a hot tub because he couldn't get over heated or his lyme would exacerbate. I did have times where my muscles would cramp up after exercise too. Lately my worst symptom is just sore lymph nodes and sore throat. My twitching and pain have gotten a lot better - I am going to post a new topic about that.

Hi Twin-Julie,
As always, thanks for your input! I seem to get worse for the several hours following hard exertion (like 90 minutes of mountain biking or road cycling). But I also seem to have that 4 week cycle thing going. My first real flare up of this later stage type stuff (twitching, muscle cramps, pain, a bit of weakness, hoarseness) started right on or around 9/15 and then settled afer a week or so. Then here they are, flaring up again on 10/15 (almost exactly) they flared up again, only worse this time. I cannot wait to get to the LLMD.
See you around the forum.
Peace...
Kenny

I wonder if there isn't some kind of a stress reponse going on.

When I overdo it, my symptoms definitely flare up.
