My 17 yr old son has just been diagnosed with advanced stage lyme and I am scared stiff and cant get answers from his dr. My son has had this for a few years now that we piece it all together-his eye sight was 20/20 and is now so bad he cant see the tv from 4 feet away, his joints swell to 3 times thier normal size, hes depressed all the time, loses weight, now has heart trouble and is so forgetful im nervous he will get lost on our own street, he has other symptoms also and we traced syptoms to almost 3 years ago that it all started. Hes also now started saying he cant live like this and its scarey. Its killing me to see my baby like this and I feel so helpless that I cant help him. The dr doesnt answer my questions or just says well lets see....dam it I cant sit and wait to see while my kid is falling apart before my eyes. From what I have read the mild anitbiotic hes on isnt going to do anything and I need to know what I do to get this dr to treat my son more aggressively then he is. My son has lost his spice for life and is about to give up on his BMX bike career. Im afraid what will happen to him if he has to continue with no light at the end of his tunnel. He has another week left on the oral antibiotics and they have done nothing at all for him so far, hes been laying around in so much pain its heartbreaking to watch. Please can anyone tell me what to do to get a fire under this drs butt before I lose my son. I dont have a computer at home and am using a public one but I will check back as soon as I can to see if anyone has any advice for me. Bless you all

I'm so sorry about your son. At least you have a diagnosis for what is ailing him. That's a start.
I hate to be trite but lighting a fire under a duck's butt will only make them quack louder.
Most doctors don't know much about Lyme disease or any of the other Tick Born Diseases that are out there these days.
You need to find a Lyme Literate Medical Doctor (LLMD) as soon as possible. Go to Seeking a Doctor and post your location there. You have to have an email address listed in your profile so that someone can email the information.
You also need to educate yourself on this disease. At the top of the Medical Questions page, there are links for new members. There are also books available if you need to do your research from home. Click on Books on the upper left of the Lymenet pages.
You don't say anything about his treatment or how he was diagnosed so I can't really comment on anything else.
Take care,
Corgilla

Tina, get a real LLMD (lyme literate Doctor) I know oh too well that if you don't you can loose everything.. my son has had first degree heart block since age 6 and we found out everyone in the family tested positive for Lyme... except him.. Dr J took his fathers history and mine and told us best to start the treatment right away... his heart block is not in question any more.. on 2 1/2 years of ABX..
he also had ADHD since age 4...anxiety/depression since age 8 and he has a collagen disorder... which left his back with a gigantic tree shaped marking of stretch marks ... it covers 3/4 of his back but he has never been over weight never lost weight and was always on the low side of the growth scale a matter of fact he was extremely under the scale from age 8 through to 12 when they put him on zyprexa to gain weight.. He is not healthy as yet and still requires the ADHD meds and has severe swings of moods.. but his heart is not in question now..(hopefully, as it killed his father after having a pacemaker put in at age 17 and a heart attack at age 36 and the last one took his life at age 42...) but I can't wait to find the money to take him to a LLMD here in fl.. to make sure that the Local yocal ducks aren't missing a part of the picture..
Get an LLMD.. don't risk this.. it is horrible what happens when they (MD's)know so little about something so complex.. you can email me if you like,, [email protected]

Hi Tina
Your story is all to common-- Most of us have gone threw similar--
If you cant get doctor to treat or give you meds--
You should take things into your own hands--
1-800-Pet Meds (on TV) sells Doxicycline and Im perty sure No perscription required--
High dose of Doxicycline is needed 500 to 600mg aday-spred threw day- Fallow directions on bottle carefully- as far as interactions with vitimins ectria. It dose matter--
I got the run around by Docs for 20 years--wasted years--
Your son can get better-I have- I used to get lost going to store- work--many times-- It did freek me out--
So get some Doxi and then find a Good Doc--It may (will) take awhile --Jay--
