I was on IV rocephin for 10 months in 2004 and have been on it since March 2005 with no problems.
Well that is not true I just remembred for a while ( now this is weird, I did tell my LLMD and she hdn't heard of it before) as soon as I would start the roc I would get itching in my vagina.
I was out of it for a few days. Oral levaqin was added. When I started back on it monday I started to cough when I started infusing and my body was itchy and kind of prickly. I had a few herx symtoms.
The next day the same thing happened without the herx. I also do IV mag, so I did that wondering if I had problems with my picc line. But no problems with the iv mag.
The next day I slowed the iv roc way down like the iv mag, it just took longer for the symtoms to start.
I called my LLMD told me to take zantac, zertec every day and benadryl 15 min before the roc and slow as possible and if not better call monday.
Has anyone else had problems like this with roc. If so is there another iv drug you used?
Thanks Cheryl

Here's a thought....I read a couple of days ago in a magazine, that a woman developed some itchiness and a rash. After going to several doctors, one figured out that she had switched from the brand name to the generic brand of one of the medicines that she was on. (Now this is a smart doctor, who was willing to dig a little!)
He surmised that while she wasn't allergic to the drug persay, the "filler" ingredients can often be different in the generic drug than what is in the brand name drug.
She went back to the brand name drug, and her itchiness and rash went away.
I know that Rocephin recently came out in the generic form. Are you taking that? Could that be the issue?

Thank you for your reply. I am still taking the Roche brand.
The last couple of days I have had increasing muscle aches, whole body lameness and leg pain. I just feel really really bad!! I wonder if it is from the levaquin. I have stopped taking it, and of course will call my LLMD on Monday.
It feels like my body has had to many meds for a while!!
I have a very bad case of chronic neuro lyme I have been in treatment since 12/03 with multiple antibotics.
You know a few good hours here and there and I have hope things are improving and I might get some of my life back.....then back to square zero as I call it and I feel like I will never improve.
But we cant give up we have to keep fighting. Cheryl

I did claforan IV for 6wks when first dx with lyme. then 1 yr later, tried Rocephin shots, did OK for 2wks, then BAM.........after the nite shot, I started coughing, tighting in the throat, etc. I was having a severe reaction. Luckily I had a EpiPen (I would suggest you get one soon) If I didn't have that, I would've had to call 911.
Before that nite, I had been having a rash on my chest and shoulders, didn't make the connection. When I tried Penicilin, I got the same rash. It is in the same family. Claforan is also in the same family but I did OK with it but will never try it again.
I was told by my doctor that you can get a allergic reaction to something over night. Be very careful and get a epipen! just in case.

AND, plenty of oral antibiotics that will not only do the "Trick," but, some are even better than Rocephin...Remember just because it is in IV form doesn't necessarily make it better when treating this disease.
Rocephin is so hard on the body...what you discribe doesn't surprise me at all. I am now symptom free and it took over 36 months of antibiotics and got the least result from IV Rocephin. I would never take that drug again...way too many problems and not enough good things.
That's just my opinion with my experience as I am NOT doc/nurse.
