My 14-year-old daughter (weight 120 pounds) started Mepron today. Doctor prescribed 1 tsp twice a day. She's feeling pretty bad after just one dose. I would be interested in other's experiences with starting on a low dose (e.g. 1/4 tsp) and ramping up slowly. Thanks.

So sorry your daughter is feeling bad after just one day on Mepron. I recommend you check with her LLMD about the problem.
Also, I assume you know that Mepron should be taken with foods that have fat (cheese, peanut butter, ice cream, meat, etc) The body absorbs the Mepron better when fat grams are present.
Keep in touch & let us know how she's doing.

Thanks for your thoughts. I do plan to call our LLMD today. Still wondering if anyone has started Mepron on a smaller than prescribed dose and ramped up slowly?

Actually, my son did start slower/with less than the prescription stated and that was what our doctor wanted.
I can't remember now but think he did build up for two or more weeks before he was using the mepron as prescribed. I remember our llmd was adament about building up slowly to the proper dosage.
(He finally fell asleep after a rough night so I can't give you his procedure/amounts right now).

My adult son staretd Mepron 4 days ago. He takes 1 tsp. twice a day. He has had no problems. He does take is with fatty foods on a full stomach.
I don't know if it would be true for Mepron but my daughter has felt awful after one dose of other meds she started. I would still call and check with your llmd.
Good luck!!

I take mepron and started at 1 tsp twice a day without too many problems. I have a friend who is still at 1/4 tsp after 3 weeks and the doc is going to pull the med because she is essentially "untreated'. If the mepron blood levels don't reach a specific level then they are ineffective. Thats why some docs don't give an option of ramping. There are blood tests for mepron levels that some docs are now using to make sure they are acheinving an effective dose.
At first my doc had me taking it with fish oil at that wasn't working all that well, once I change to a fatty food & fish oil caps it was much better.

Ohhhh forgot to add, , , , when I first got the bottle (which I paid $877 cash for) I didn't know whether it went in the fridge or not and it didn't have any stickers so I refrigerated it. I called the pharmacy the next day and the pharmacist said it didn't need to be refrigerated.
I took it warm and it was YUK . . . ever since, I put mine in the refigerator and take it cold. It tastes alot better - a little like bubble gum if you use your imagination

I started on 1/4 tsp 2 x a day for 3 days then 1/2 tsp 2 x a day for 3 days then 3/4 tsp 2 x a day for 3 days and (finally) 1 tsp 2 x a day ever since.
I'm currently taking Mepron 21 days then off a week plus both Zithromax (250 mg 2 x a day) and Flagyl (250mg 3 x a day).
Herxed after about 1 week and have the runs pretty bad.
Good news - seem to be getting a little better when not herxing.

Thanks to everyone for such good input. I'm kicking myself I didn't post this before we started. She's now had four doses (1 tsp) each and is still insisting on taking the full dose. She feels bad, but not terrible. She went into school late today, but stayed after for a 3 hour drama rehearsal. We'll just have to see what tomorrow brings ... doctor warned of herx on day 3. Did others have that and if so, how long did it last? Does it make sense to reduce dose if herx is bad? We have call into dr., but didn't hear from her today. Thanks again for the support.

This is my second time "ramping" up mepron. Two different LLMDs both had me take one tsp 1xday for a week then add the second tsp the next week.
I cant stand the stuff. Trails Posts: 1950 | From New Mexico | Registered: Sep 2001

I just noticed that you live in Fairfax. I live in Burke. What Dr. is your daughter seeing? I have 2 teenagers whom I will eventually test for Lyme. They go to Robinson, where they both are involoved in Theatre. Rehersals are grueling, I couldnt do it myself! Hope your daughter does well with Mepron. Cindy
