Has anyone combined Vantin, a cephalosporin, with anything else?
My LLMD wants me to combine Vantin 200mg. with Tetracycline 500mg. I've read here that Vantin has helped others - just curious if anyone else has combined it.
I am also to try other combos:
1. Augmentin 875 mg. with Amoxicillin 1000 mg.
2. Erythromycin 500 mg. with Malarone 250 mg.
3. Flagyl 250 mg. with Bactrim DS 400 mg.
Any ideas?
Also, looking for a database where I can learn about all these meds. My pharmacist recommended lexicomp but you have to pay for the service.
I don't have insurance and sure would like to know the track record of all these meds. for treatment of Lyme.
Thanks.

I've never done the Vantin and Tetracyclene, But I have, and still do on and off Augmentin with Ammox... I really like this combo and I do really well pn pennicillan class of drugs... I also do Bicillan as well. I hope you find a combo that is helpful to you Posts: 437 | Registered: Sep 2004

My undestanding is that tetracyclines render cephalosporins ineffective, by preventing bugs from multiplying. It's when the bugs multiply that cephalosporins can kill them.
As it is, Bb are very slow multipliers compared to other disease-causing bacteria, one of the main reasons that long-term treatment is essential.
If you add a tetracycline, and it penetrates everywhere the cephalosporin penetrates, you might as well not be taking the cephalosporin at all.
That's the theory, anyway. It sounds like your doctor thinks it may work differently in practice, and I'm certainly open to that possibility. If you get a chance, maybe you could get him or her to explain their rationale?
Why wouldn't the Tetracycline cancel out the Vantin's effectiveness? We might all learn something from your doctor's answer.

Paulscha - I can try to question my doctor. He's only available via his nurses and my questions would probably just confuse/irritate them - they always seem swamped. Plus, every time I call I have to pay $ - even if it's to clarify something he recommended, such as the scripts.
Which is why I rely so much on Lymenet!

Thanks Paulscha for suggesting that the tetracyclines may inhibit the cephlasporins. I have just finished 3 weeks of Meptron and Zithromax for Babsiosa and am about to embark on treating the "borderline" Lyme. My GP wants to use Doxycycline and Ceftrixone (IM) for 6 and 12 weeks respectively. But the Lymedoc here in Western Canada prefers Ketek and Flagyl. I will not be able to withstad the Flagyl as I have occasional bouts of vertigo; I am betting the Flagyl will exacerbate this and I won't be able to finish what I've started. Hence the Ceftrixone. The Lymedoc recommends Ceftrixone 1 gram IM, pulsed 3 days on, 5 days off, combined with Zithromax, also pulsed 5 days on, 5 days off, both for 3 months. I had wondered why he didn't used doxycycline, but now I see that it may interfere with the Ceftrixone IM. That said, I sure wish I could take the Flagyl; he's convinced that only the drugs in the flagyl-type family will eradicate the cysts than some people have, and that is why some people do not get better. That said, and with seeing how many people are helped with simple Amoxicillan, I wonder why I am not getting Ceftrixone IM and Amoxicillan combined? Why the Zithromax, which it is purported to not be that good against Lyme?
