I'm taking Doxy and a probiotic right now and overall my body doesn't ache as much which is great. However, it's making me sick. I feel like something is eating away at my internal organs. My energy is down and I feel like I have the flu all the time. If anyone has had experience with doxy and could give me some advice I would really appreciate it. I'm not sure if I should stop for awhile until I regain my strength or if I should tough it out.

Laura, I started doxy three months ago and it knocked the stuffing out of me for the first few weeks. I could only take 100mg a day for a few days then stop when I felt too bad, then I'd start again and do a few more days ......then stop to let things settle down.
After about three weeks I could take 100mg every day so then I started trying 200 a day, same thing.....few days 200..... few days 100, till I could take 200 every day.
You might find it best to pulse like this til you get to the dose you need, my doc says it's best to let your body clear the toxins, you could ask your doctor if this would be OK for you.

Do you think it's better to take a break from it or will I only delay things by doing that. Right now I feel awful but I'm putting up with it. Would you recommend toughing it out as long as possible before taking a break?

Well I'm not a doctor so I can only tell you what I did, and I found I had to take breaks. A break of two or three days won't delay things too much and if you're feeling really bad the toxins might be building up to levels your body can't cope with. A couple of days to let the toxins clear can help you stay on your treatment.

Just one thing to add about this. If you herx really hard, you want to make sure that all the toxins are able to leave your system.
If you herx so hard that your body can't keep up with getting rid of toxins and it gets overwhelmed, then the toxins can get RE-ABSORBED into your body and that is not good. It's basically poisoning yourself.
So...it may be better to take the breaks as your body needs them to detox and then begin again.
Cheers,
Alison

When I was on doxy I found the tablets were easier on my stomach that the capsules. My pharmacy ordered them for me. I needed to take them with a meal & a lot of water. I needed to eat fattier foods and nuts.
I read something here about fat triggering bile which helps remove toxins. I also took primal defense 2 hours after doxy.

when i started doxy i had my worse herx yet, The worst part was that i didnt even know i had lyme at the time. Iwasnt feeling good and the doctor just gave me some antibiotics and told me to take them. On the third night it felt like i was hit by a train. Ended up stoping because i dint know what was going on. It ended up putting me in remmision for two months because it was one month after the bite when i was given the meds, still in the acute stage. BUT WHEN THE TWO MONTHS ENDED I WAS SICKER THAN I COULD IMAGING. It took 7 months after that and many doctors before they found out i had lyme. If i only new then what i know now i know, i could of caught this evil disease in its early stage. Now its progressed beyond belief.

I have been taking doxy for a while now and It makes me nauseated.I hear it is tough on the stomach.
I had tryed all the natural cures first but the only thing that worked for me was taking prescription strenth prilosec.
you might want to ask your doctor about this.
Take care dana

I take Doryx, which is Doxy with something in it to help the stomach. I can't even take ibuprofin or asprin because it upsets my stomach, and after a month I've had no problem with the Doryx. It's alot more expensive though. Hope this helps! Jill

I take doxy, and I think it helps to eat a little, then take doxy, then finish eating. In fact, my doc and his people suggest this with all ABX.
Also, I found that ginger helped at times. I just added fresh ginger to meals, or chewed on some. It's strong, but you don't need much. It quells nausea.
I use Aciphex and Zantac, also.
I find that very fatty food makes the nausea worse (probably because the food and medicine stays in the stomach too long). Acidic food, too.
I must say that I don't get as much nausea and stomach pain now. I think I'm getting used to it. (I've been taking it for a couple of months.)
I did start slowly. I take 400 per day now, in two divided doses.
I hope this helps.

I just started my doxy this week and it is going better for me than the tetracycline. I was so nauseated on the tetra. I am thinking that different meds effect people differently. I do have a question though. I thought that you couldn't take antacids with them? I could sure use some. lol

No, you can't take antacids with them. My husband has GERD, and has been on Aciphex for over a year. Two different people told him to take a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar a day instead. He has, and since he started a month ago he hasn't needed a single pill. It also decreases blood sugar and cholesterol. I'm not sure if it'll work with the meds though.....might want to research it, it really works!
Good Luck! Jill

I found doxy rather rude on the gut. When I was on 400--mg doxy a day along with 500 or so mg (or maybe it was a gram) cefuroxime axefil ( 'cefftin'), I had to have yarrow tea, than a while after that, eat a moderate amount of rice with vegetables, then take the doxy, then a bit more food, then the 'cefftin', then a little more yarrow tea (... ...'yum'... ... ...-- but yarrow, though not great tasting, is miracle material for soothing the gut) DaveS

Haven't tryed Yarrow tea but will try it. I tryed peppermint teas and Chamille tea.Helped with the nausea while drinking them but came back right after.
Am on liquid Carafate. My Dr. said if you take any antacids like carafate or gaviscon to space two hours a part from ABX.
Doxy is brutal on my stomach but does really well in combination with septra and palquinel.Got some strong brain herx's from.I take 400 mg doxy a day.Had to back down to 200 because of stomach issues. 200mg wasn,t holding me.
Am back to 400 and am hopeing the prilosec and carafate will help my stomach.
Will add the yarrow tea asap.
Thanks for the tip. Blessings dana
