Abbie, My daughter is trying ketek again. She has never liked it; but she had a lot of gastric problems too. She has been taking a lot of supplements to repair her gut and is not having too much trouble this time. However, she is having fluttery feelings in her back and chest that are not helped by zanax. Today the flutters started migrating to calves and other areas. She has also been extremely irritable. I don't know if herxing can be immediate. If so, that could be what is happening with you, as I think it is with my daughter. I will be interested in hearing what others have to say. Her LLMD did say to take two days off each week from the ketek in order to allow the body to detox. Again, I would like to hear other people's experiences with this too. lymeout

So sorry you are having a rough time. The pressure in your head is a hard one.I get this when I herx.
But that could mean a die off or brain herx. The ketes are having a bad day.
Some good tummy advice I have gotten is;: chew on some ginger Don't eat greasy food. try napping sitting up for a while after you take abx. Drink tons of water when you take them. eat oatmeal.It goes down well and doesn,t have as much of a carb/sugar effect.I take mine at breakfast and this helps with my nausea.
try taking a probiotic that has multi strains in it and space two hours form abx.

I have heard 24 to 48 hours after but with my own experience's I have herxed at the end of my first day.
My LLD likes to switch abx around I guess so the ketes don't get to comfortable.
Ketek is a hard one on the gut but I had some big herx's on it.

I have been herxing on Ketek from the minute I put it in my mouth in March 2005.
It's powerful stuff, but other than herxing I have not had ill effects.
Just make sure you take your probiotics.

I have really improved on Ketek and had no bad side effects from May until early September.
Then I got diarrhea about an hour after takign it, two day in a row. My LLMD said to stop for a while.
Seven weeks later, I returned to it, although my stomach was not really right for those 7 weeks, but not like diarrhea every day or anything, just not right and sometimes diarrhea.
This week, I have started again, and teh diarrea has been back.....so, now I just don't know if it's ketek or not which is causing it.
I hope that whatever you're experiencing now will subside, because I think it can be a great drug improvement wise with Lyme.

I found Ketek to be very powerful, providing a non-stop herx, in my case. I actually pulse it w/ some other meds every other day now and find it is much more manageable. I tried a lot of ABX combos prior to introducing Ketek into my regimen, and Ketek was one of the ABX that brought me out of a relapse. Fortunately, I've never had many issues with my stomach on any drug, but I also keep up with my probiotics regularly.

I never knew I could Herx IMMEDIATELY after taking a pill, but I guess I learn something new about this disease everyday!
The stomach stuff wasn't as bad today and neither was the head pain. So.....thanks!!!
Will keep you all updated.

Hi, I also started to herx right away. Also, like a lot of people, I have never been able to take the full 800mg dose, so I break it into 400mg/2x day.
Right now, I take it as a "maintenance" drug. The first two weeks, it caused this nonstop gushy cold, I was hauling kleenex everywhere. Now, as long as I stay on it, it helps keep life almost symptom-free. It also restored a lot of energy after the first two weeks.
I take probiotics, nystatin 3x/day, and an herbal extract with berberine in it, which can kill yeast. I use coptis chenisis, but berberine is also in goldenseal and some other herbs.
For liver support, I take milk thistle, N-acetyl choline, phosphatidylcholine, and an herbal blend with schisandra called Dr. Zhang's Hepa Formula 2.

To help your stomach, take the ketek in the middle of dinner, and don't lie down for at least a 1/2 hour after that. I have found that works better than taking it earlier in the day, when there's less food in my stomach (even if I take it with breakfast). If you're taking other meds at the same time, take a few bites of food in between pills. It's a pain because you have to bring the pills to the table or wherever you're eating, but it works.
I've been taking ketek for a few weeks and I also have the pressure in my head.

Ketek made me horribly sick with c.difficile and gastritis. If the nause is really bad, i would try a different drug instead. Make sure you are taking it with a full big meal and a glass of water...then take it. Also make super sure you are dumping acidophilus in your body all day to prevent things liek c.diff. Ketek is great for Lyme, but it can cause these serious GI problems.
