At the Lyme conference last week they said that the best two to start out are Rifampin and Ciprofloxin, which Dr. J put my daughter on. I also understand that Rocephin IV and Claforan IV she is on would hit the Bart too. Biaxin is another with some success noted by Dr. B. in his talk. He talked about a new Bartonella Like Organism and said that levofloxin is working very well with these patients, BUT it is not used in kids under 18 and can cause painful tendonitis. So for a teen this would not be considered I would think. Dr. J. would not put our daughter on it last year when he diagnosed bart in her.

Maybe you should mention that stomach problems. The doc may rx a proton pump inhibitor which could help. Those are the pills for Acid Reflux. They've helped my stomach a lot.
Prilosec and Prevacid are the 2 that come to mind. One is over the counter (I think Prilosec).
If you have a prescription plan, it's cheaper to have one of the others prescribed.

A teaspoon of apple cider vinegar a day will eliminate your need for those pills. Try it, it really works. (Also lowers cholesterol and blood sugar) Cheaper too! Good Luck, Jill

I used the zythromax. However each person response differently. I know a young lady (20 y/o) that was on doxy IV.

Good luck..Bart is Hell..I think the IV Rocephin was the best help. But we ended up having to stop all IV's..lymemomtooo

Hmmmm - w/ my 15 y/o who recently tested positive for Bart, Dr. J is using Cipro and Zithromax.
KK was initially dx'd w/ gestational lyme 2002. She began w/ Zithromax, then added Minocycline I think. Somewhere in there she took some Flagyl before being placed on Ketek about a year ago. After 6 months on the Ketek and following my second Babesia positive, Dr. J added Plaquenil to the mix which brings us to the positive Bart!
I too tested pos for Bart about 2 or 3 years into my treatment - followed Zith, Flagyl, Minocycline, IV Claforen, amoxy, IV Rocephin!
1st I was given oral Rifampin + Bactrim DS. Then, my doc decided to try IV Chloramphenicol which was followed by more Rifampin, Bactrim DS, Plaquenil and 3 weeks of IM Rocephin - whew!
Still sick as all get out but no more pos bart tests here!! Have had 2 pos Babesia tests tho and those followed 8 months of Mepron/Zith!!!
So there ya go - maybe that will help!

PS - KK seems to tolerate the new meds pretty good and we've seen some herxing and a tad of improvement in between (at least we hope it is permanent improvement!!)
