Anyone a survivor of an IV catheter infection? Curious to know how your infection treatment affected your Lyme. My daughter just (barely) survived an infected IV catheter, but her Lyme symptoms are now greatly improved. Wondering how long similar effects lasted with similar survivors.

Did she receive heavy doses of antibiotics, I presume? Most likely responsible for the improvement...?

This is an interesting subject. An IV infection is ussually associated with a VERY high temperature, higher than that attained with the old DNP Lyme treatment. Does the high temperature kill off the Lyme? I don't know, But I have asked people who have had this problem how it affected the Lyme symptoms, but have never recieved a reponse.
I just don't know....

I've had two catheters placed in me. The second one became infected with MRSA. I placed a large silver curad bandage on it and within 2-3 weeks I had a total recovery. best of luck

Glad to still be alive to be posting this. I had sepsis from infection of my Hickmas catheter TWICE!
The first time it began with sudden shaking chills as soon as I started my IV, pain all over my body, and a rapid fever that spiked to 107 degrees in the ambulance. I dialed 911 and the police and medics came and kicked the door in. They saved my life by getting me to the hospital quickly, and my LLMD the EMT's got on the radio and told them to pull out the line right away and start me on IV Cipro. Scariest thing EVER people.
It threw me for a loop for weeks, really wiped out and exhausted. Scare dof IV ever again. However, 2 months later, i got Hickman # 2 put in, and low and behold, 3 weeks later, it happened again, rapid fever, shaking shills, pain all over, scary, scary stuff...this time I knew what it was and again, it happened so fast you have to dial 911. As soon as I started the IV, it happened so fast. Again i was given IV Cipro, and sent home the next day with Cipro and given soem more IV Rocephin in the hospital. The crucial thing is that they pull the line immediately!
After that, I never did IV again! I switched to orals and IM Bicillin.
It takes awhile to recover from sepsis. Make sure you are treated after coming out of the hospital. Take it easy, and dont rush back into getting another line, PICC or Hickman, or anything. That bacteria can still be in your blood and get you again. Trust me! She may feel better from the IV being stopped, and thus, the herx calming down, or she may be better! Its best to make sur eyou do not just abruptly stop treatment. usually you are switched to oral pills or Bicillin or both.
hope this helps! We are lucky to be alive!

Hope those of you that got these nasty infections are recovering nicely. How scarey, and like you needed that!
My kids are starting IV soon, which regular readers have heard about ad nauseum.
The main thing that makes me nervous is the risk of infection. Especially with me being a clutz at this pt. Last time, I kept dropping supplies on floor and having to throw out.
Anybody have a good system? May be stupid question...
Also, if you have had an infection, do you have any sense of how it happened?

I was on my death bed with my infected line. I ran fever for 3 wks before the light blub went off the they pulled it! It took me months to recover, I was bed ridden for months during all of that! And then I did HBOT that helped me pull out of it. I was just put on Biaxin (I think) I keep asking the doctor is I should be getting Vanco or something strong but he said No. I think that was a mistake and should have seen my other doc put I was so weak Posts: 315 | From USA | Registered: May 2005
