My last question for a while. Im dying here though! My scalp has been so itchy and dry! To make matters worse, when I wash my hair I am actually losing quite a bit of it! What the heck could be going on?? Anyone know what can help it?? I don't know if this is related to Lyme or what but its killing me here. Im only taking Rifampin, Flagyl and diflucan along with prilosec. I cant honestly take much more of this Am I gonna lose my hair now too??????

I'm trying to think back, and I had about every symptom in the book, and then some. I want to say the dry itchy scalp was a side-effect from some med I was on, but not sure.
If you have checked out the package inserts on the Flagyl and Rifampin, Diflucan and Prilosec and don't find anything then maybe ask your pharmacist if you can add Benadryl. Also, make sure you drink TONS of water.
As a matter of fact, in the a.m. why don't you call your pharmacist and ask if this situation could be a side-effect from one of your meds.
I will say that I did lose hair during my treatment, but the good thing is that it did grow back.
Hang in there, this too shall pass!

Hi Nancy-
Yes, I lost a great deal of hair before good treatment. It was about the same time when I tested pos via PCR.
I do remember ichy too, but I think that was later while in IV, not sure though.

Yes, i have hair loss...especially while in the shower...i run my fingers through my hair and they come out covered in hair...and it doesnt stop...i usually have to get a tissue to put the hair in so it doesnt clog the drain...its scary...but i think hair loss is on the symptom list for lyme. I have thick hair...well had thick hair...ive noticed it changed...it is also very dull looking....if you look at my hair only you can tell something is wrong with me....

Could it be hormonal too?? I mean I did have a hormone panel done and it was all normal, but still I wonder. I did call the pharmacist-not a side effect of any of the meds. This is the straw that is breaking the camels back. How do I stop it from falling out????

It could be your thyroid being affected by lyme. I have the same problem. Have you gained any weight?

Nal, I had hair loss and dry, dull skin for a while and taking essential fatty acids helped a lot. Dr. B has some guidelines like avoid flax oil but I did evening primrose oil and cod liver oil and that helped a bunch. Also, hormones played a huge part for me and once those were balanced my hair stopped coming out in the shower. When it starts coming out again, I know to start paying attention to hormone levels. My MD is very holistic oriented and we did a saliva hormone profile instead of a blood test. She said it was more reliable. Hang in there.

I haven't noticed any real weightgain. I just know though that if they do a thyroid test, it will come back normal-it always, always does.

I'm going thru scalp itch and hair loss on top of my head, it's only about 1/4 inch on top of my head but sides and back are still long ?!??!! I've been off diflucan for months now, so I can't imagine what problem could be. All I know is loads of hair coming out in shower! And VERY itchy!!

My daughter has complained from time to time of itchy, scabby scalp; but only recently noted that her hair is coming out. She is three years into treatment. I read early on that hair loss was a symptom, and I was hoping she would not be bothered by it. We see her doctor next week, and I will ask her about it. If I learn anything helpful, I will let you know. My guess is that it is associated with trauma - a shock to the system, perhaps brought on by medication or body's response to med? She just began high doses of ketek- hair loss and creepy-crawly sensations have definitely escalated with it. Don't know if there is a relationship.
