Hi Friends,

I've been going through so many GI probs and can't find any "magic" abx that helps eliminate them. My big concern is I keep on losing weight and can't afford to have this keep happening . Would appreciate any specific symptoms/articles to what "leaky gut" is...and what tests you took to determine a positive.

Thanks for any and all suggestions or thoughts....

Lots of links in my Helpful Links section at my web site below. You can get a Lac/Mannitol Challenge test from Great Smokies as one option for testing for Leaky Gut.

I'm reviving an old post because I believe this has got to be a fairly common problem with us Lymies due to meds we have to take.

If you are suffering any auto-immune or allergy disorders with your illness, read up on Leaky Gut Syndrome

Also see my post under RA diagnosis which outlines how I feel Advil and the drug Ketek created a LGS in me and brought on RA.

Here is another website to research. However, a Google search will bring up much information on this condition.

I suffered from cronic diarrhea for about 20 years.

Doctors in 3 continents couldn't help me (!), what they all gave me were anti-acids. Useless. I very likely had Helicobacter pilori, as most of my family members died of GI cancer and it is now known that many GI cancers are caused by H. pilori. My mom had ulcer, and I gastritis that comes and goes.

This was before lyme.

About 12 years ago, I thought that was the end for me, as I couldn't keep even a plain toast, even if my diet had been toast-only (or almost) for about 2,3 days. So I decided to:

- control diet strictly, eliminating all foods which I was sensitive with (if they irritated my mouth, I discontinued taking it). No white sugar, no white flour, total no to junk food, started chewing thoroughly the food. After all these years, I still cook and try to eat as well as I can (lots of veggies, fruits, whole grain rice etc).

- mokshabustion relieved pains and stomach acidity (you can do it only with a very hot bottle of water 2x day, while in bed, specially behind (around the vertebral column, from the middle part downwards), for about 20 minutes minimum, long term therapy). You can learn other 'points'that work well too if you go to an acupuncturist and ask him.

Only these two things allowed my body to slowly recuperate, but I was never healed.

After about 5 years, I tried homoepathy. Took me about 6 months to feel I improved rather well with it. Never to be 100% though, but could have a normal life, could gain weight again (I'm still thin, but not to the point I was).

Then 2 years ago, I discovered a plant that works almost like magic for me. And no side effects. It's called Espinheira Santa (in Brazil). I think I saw it in the rain-tree site. Only one capsule is enough to reverse a mild problem, but if you're on a cronic condition, you may need more and for longer.

I buy it in any naturapathic pharmacy everytime I go to Brazil, I had heard of it for ages, but I only tried it a few years ago. I was skeptical a herb could help on anything...

It's a very common natural medicinal plant used in Brazil.

It's been then a few years that I don't have gastritis anymore.

I'm still taking Espinheira Santa while I take herbs / supplements for lyme that cause GI problems with good results.

Good luck,
Selma

I read where leaky gut can cause allergies and sensitivities, not just food. I have multiple allergies and multiple chemical sensitivities.

Cow colostrum supposed to have benefits for allergies and help lining in gut. Does not cure me but has helped enough that I keep buying it.

they have a phone # on their website, (800)522-4762
https://www.gsdl.com/secure/contact/
Just call and ask the price of the test, and they will send you, or your doctor the kit w/instructions.

I have had good luck getting partial about 3/4 coverage on great Smokies tests, so definetly submit the claim after you pay upfront, its worth it!

I thought that those tests from Great Smoky Mountain Labs required a physician's order??? Can a patient order those him/herself?

If a physician orders the test, insurance covers all or a lot of it.

Yeast is a frequent cause of leaky gut. A lot of GI doctors prescribe Prilosec etc., which actually encourages the growth of organisms by keeping acid down (acid controls overgrowths).

My teenage daughter has healed a lot from leaky gut, over an 8 month period, with the following: elimination diet (allegy diet, not yeast diet, wth a lot of rice, no wheat, corn, eggs, dairy, citrus, soy etc.). Yeast treatment with a lot of fluconazole for months (up to 400mg) and 4 Nystatin tablets/day. Gastrocrom, a clear liquid by Rx, made from an Egyptian plan, also used for asthma, which helps w/inflammation, L-Glutamine (or Intestinew, which has L-Glutamine and herbs), glutathione IM or IV followed by N-acetyl cysteine for immune support, and, now that absorption is improved, lots of vitamins and minerals, including calcium (since she's off dairy).

She also had repeated gyn, infections w/no normal flora, positive for B strep, Klebsiella, yeast and gardneralla (bacterial vaginosis) at different times.

In addition to the Great Smokies tests, several of them actually, not just for LGS, she also had an endoscopy which showed gastritis, lots of acid, and yeast all through her GI tract.

She was unable to eat, for a long time, but is now eating fine. It took patience. She is now slowly trying to reintroduce a few foods, in extremely tiny amounts.

She is on abx this week for lungs....don't know if she will be able to treat Lyme w/abx though. Also has autoimmune problems w/positive ANA etc. and now POTS.

I've been on abx for 5 years. I shudder to think about it. Good luck!

If you don't have the $$ for all the tets. Try a gluten free / dairy free diet. My belief, based on the theroies of Functional Medicine, is that these substances are irritating to the digestive system.

Digeston is of primary importance in maintaining health and healing. Cut these foods (daiy and gluten) out for 3 to 6 months and see if you heal.

Yes, it is another restriction, but let's face it, the processed American diet is poison. I believe in getting back to a mostly greens, veggies and lean protein way of eating.

I use butter, soy cheese, healthy oils and fats, spices to flavor my food .... I have re-learned to eat .......... yeah I miss ice cream.......... but I don't miss being 283 lbs and feeling like crap all the time. Food/nutrition is medicine ...... if you are trying to heal you must be careful about what goes in and on your body.

At the very least cut out ALL white flour, sugar , corn syrup and nitrates!!!! Read labels!!!!!

Be Well... read Gigi's posts,

PS Flouride in toothpaste is bad for your immune system. Buy flouride free toothpaste on line.
