I'm somewhat new at this, and my LLMD put me on Biaxin. After three weeks, I was in so much pain for ten days, I thought it would never end. I wanted to go to the hospital, but didn't know if they would even know what to do with me there. Any suggestions for next time?
What works against the pain and vommiting? They seemed to go hand in hand for me.
I'm now off Biaxin and getting IV Rocefin, but am told this will be a monthly experience.
Help, anyone!
Thanks Jenn a.k.a. schnuddelka

Hey Schunddelka; I am sorry you are so sick on your meds. I also have a constant batlle with upset tummy on my orals.Almost the whole time on IV too
Here are a few things that has helped me: I take prescription strength prilosec in the morning.
I have found RX carafate to be helpful.Space two hours between meds.
Drinking lots of water help alot. And sitting up for as long as I can after taking any oral med.
I always take food with meds.Very important with IV transfution to eat something first.
Make sure you are takings lots of pro-biotics,I take 6 a day with multitrain formula,s.Space two hour after abx.
The only over the counter thing I found is extra strength Gaviscon.
Chewing on ginger helps me and peppermint teas's too.
I take for pain one ultram and two extra strength tylonal.Be careful with ultram-It can get me wired sometimes.
Hope this helps and you feel better soon.I would run anything you read on this board with your doc first.
Take care dana

Jenn, I don't vomit but the nausea is very bad, the best thing for this is a LOT of water to dilute the toxins plus green tea, and for the pain plenty of Vitamin C.
Dana, ultram does that to me too, do you get really weird thoughts? I had to stop taking it.

I was having such bad die-off, I halved my abx and still had plenty of die-off. My doctor also has me pulsing my meds. I couldn't handle Biaxin and was switched to Zithromax/Ceftin which, for me, was easier although I know Biaxin is a great abx.
I think when we're chronic we sometimes start out too fast. We have to be able to function!

Thanks for the support, guys. I know there's a light at the end of the tunnel, but it's dim.
Do you ever go to the hospital, and if yes, what do they do for you?
Hopefully inspired, Jenn a.k.a. Schnuddelka

Hi,
We have not gone to the hospital because of bad herxing. Most posts I have read have said ER staff is usually not lymeliterate. Of course, there are situations-where you need to go: heart problems, for one instance. I am not a doctor, though.
I think that there must be a way to treat the lyme with an antibiotic that is easier on the stomach. I draw the line when I start throwing up. You are losing the medicine anyway, right? There are others to try. It is wearing, though.
My daughter has a hard time with sensitive stomach but it is getting better with treatment and time. She takes orals MWF. It is hard to get antibiotics into her but slow and sure...Our dr. always has us cut down antibiotic when herxing gets too miserable.
Hope you get feeling better. The beginning is the worst so better days are coming.

Jenn, Exactly 28 days after I started abx, my body became completely paralyzed. I could talk and think but couldn't move anything else at all.
This wasn't something I'd read about here, and even though I figured it was a herx, I was scared. We called 911, and I was taken to the hospital. We didnt know what else to do.
I made sure my SO had all my medicines in a bag, as well as my Lyme tests and my medical power of atty.
We were able to patch in my LLMD to the ER doc, and my LLMD gave specific instructions about what to do. I was given something via IV.
In all, the incident lasted almost 5 hours. Afterwards, we couldn't really see anything done in the ER that we couldn't have done ourselves.
The same thing happened 28 days later. This time, we didn't go to the hospital -- I was just made comfortable and kept warm. Again, the duration was almost 5 hours.
I've been on abx now since June. The paralysis hasn't occurred since those first two months, though during each herx, I experience some limited amount of it.
If I had it to do over again, I'd still have gone to the ER. It was so scary; I wouldn't have known anything else to do.
I hope this is helpful, and hope this herx cycle ends soon for you. Each month, mine have become less intense and lasted less time.
As far as nausea, acupuncture really has helped me, I think.

I sort of stumbled upon a remedy for my nausea from the herxing by accident -- or maybe I should say out of desperation.
I had an episode where I was so nauseous that I couldn't even move my head one millimeter or even move my eyeballs or say the letter "s" without going into a series of vomiting.
So there I was, vomiting JUST from nausea (this was a new one for me) and unable to do anything but sit (not lie down) stock still for hours on end.
Anyway, at one point I asked my sister to get my charcoal/bentonite clay pills. I keep some of these on hand because they are a miracle for food poisoning (other people use similar pills to avoid hangovers because they soak up alcohol).
I took two of the pills without moving my head (had to do this dry so my head wouldn't move) and managed to keep them down. I swear, within a few minutes the nausea lessened.
Within an hour I was able to crawl into bed and lay my head down. Within 2 hours I felt sooo much better and fell asleep, and the next morning all symptoms of the herx were gone (which is also amazing because the herx had lasted several days that that point)!
So now I am definitely keeping these pills on hand for the next time. The clay and the charcoal absorb all the toxins and the poisons in your system, so that they are no longer in your system and away from places in your body that can re-absorb the toxins.
I dunno, for whatever reason they helped and they helped fast. I don't know if this will work every time or not, but I'm still keeping them around!
Alison
