Thanks for posting this. My Gi doc tried me on Rifaximin, but the first doese brought on diarrhea again. It would be nice to see them get at the root cause of IBS, and stop calling it a syndrome! It probably is a bacteria.

Yet another disease for which "successful" intervention is for the patient to be persuaded to give up hope for a cure and in which paients who pursue treament are considered to be "difficult." I hate ducks. David

Yep. My "IBS" of eleven years standing mysteriously went away after a month on doxycycline. Hasn't been seen since.

ALL- and I mean ALL my GI problems went away after my abx therapy. (And some of the digestive problems, I thought were genetic- just getting older and not able to eat certain things anymore- are all gone too).
The Docs just aren't able to string these things together. I think it's because we have such specialized medicine now - every ones a "specialist" they look at every organ as a stand-alone unit. - like it's not connected to the whole body. I wonder sometimes if these Docs even understand how the WHOLE body works.

Hi, I'm really interested that you should post on this subject right now.
I have been on Cefaclor (I think that the Us is Ceftin)for quite a few weeks now and I have noticed a marked improvement with my IBS - one of my first symptoms.
I had to ration my tablets down to one a day, a couple of weeks ago (doc was away on holiday and I couldn't get my script) for about two weeks and I noticed a return of my IBS symptoms which made me think that they must be doing something for it.
My GP has, in the past, told me that he has seen an improvement in patients with IBS taking Flagyl. I am adding that in with the cefaclor in a few weeks .

Interesting that after years of believing ulcers were caused by stress, scientists learned they were caused by a bacterium. So, it's not surprising that some stomach problems are resolved by taking abx, whether or not Lyme contributed to the problem. I, too, suffered from IBS until I went on the Perricone Prescription (name of book) diet. I was just eating too many carbs. In only three days I solved a thirty-year-old problem.

I was dx with IBS at the Mayo two years ago and prescribed Zelnorm. I haven't taken Zelnorm or had any IBS, colitis, diviticulitis problems since I started my first abx with LD.
