Has anyone's liver enzymes become elevated because of IV abx? I had to stop IV treatment (which was helping) to recover. I'm afraid that I may not get well enough to resume treatment within the month.

Yikes!! Is it just me? What do you do?

I had it happen too. My llmd said probably from the gallstones I developed from the rocephen. Stopped IV, gallstones dissolved, liver values went down to normal.

I know that people have used milk thistle to help liver function. Maybe someone here will post the milk thistle protocal.

My daughter had been on IV Rocephin for 8 weeks and then IV Claforan for 4 weeks befoe developing a severe drop in her White blood count (.9) and a rise in liver functions.

We called the makers of Claforan and discussed it with Dr. J last week. It seems that these issues do happen, and the standard course of treatment is to go off it for a week or until the counts return to normal and then try it again at a lower dose and maybe every other day at first. If it is tolerated Dr. J said he would increase it.

Dr. J said that it is important to understand the normal fluctuations in these lab tests when on IV. In the WBC count he said that they want to see it stay above 1000 (1). I asked about the liver funtions (AST and ALT) and he said the low 100s my daughters were were not serious, that readings in the 1000 are a problem.

Because of other side effects my daughter is off for a while. Dr. J is going to either going to start her on another IV in Jan. or sooner if she gets feeling alot worse.

Good Luck,

Mine went through the roof in three weeks of IV Rocephin. LLMD said highest he's seen in that short a time; normally it takes months to get that high. Took me off a week; they went down a bit, finished my allotted month (all Blue Cross would give me anyway) and didn't argue for more.

Now on just Amoxy + Probenecid + Flagyl, liver panels still very elevated.

My liver just does not like antibiotics.

I know I don't have any dread liver diseases as I have normal ALT and AST numbers from previous physicals. It's just the antibiotics.
