I woke up this morning with a swollen right eye. The lid and the underneath are very swollen. My left eye is swollen underenaeth also but not on the lid. Do you think this is a food allergy or an allergy? Or Does it sound like Bells Palsy?

I also have tingling in my upper lip and on the right side of my face...UGH

Just in time for a nice long weekend with family.

Anyinput is appreciated
Daniella [kiss]

I never had Bell's Palsy, but as I understand it the muscles in the face just sag.

Tingling is another symptom and not to be overlooked.

Daniella,

You are describing almost exactly one of the outbreaks I experienced before learning that I had Lyme. No, it's not Bell's palsy, which is inflammation of the seventh facial nerve causing all the muscles on one side of the face to droop.

My rashes stopped after going on doxycycline 200mg bid.

Good luck!

I had something similar happen to me a few weeks ago. It is scary....my eye did not swell...but my right side of my face was numb including my neck..and right eye.and after the numbness went away 2 days later i had tingling that hurt. Do you usually sleep on this side of your face?? Ive noticed whatever side i sleep on is usually numb when i wake up. Did you happen to indulge in more sugar/foods that would cause yeast to have a field day....it could also be the cause.
I would try taking some benadryl....if it is an allergy that may help.

It lasted through the day. I had thought maybe it was from something I ate on Thanksgiving but its still there.

I'm not sure what its from...My whole face is a little puffy and itchy though...arg!

My first Lyme symptom was my lower lip swelling and dropping to my chin. Two days later, my upper lip swelled and dropped over my lower, making me look like a Simpson's character. Both occurred after eating dinner, which made me think it was a food allergy, and both times I was normal by the next day. Two days later, I ate all the same foods--just to see if it had indeed been a food allergy--and nothing happened. A couple days later, late in the day, swellings and welts popped up all over my face and my left eyelids, upper and lower, swelled. I looked like Elephant Man. Still, my MD and dentist thought I was allergic to something. Then, about a week later--eleven weeks after I'd pulled a tick off my chest--I broke out one afternoon from top of head to sole of foot in a rash. I noticed after throwing off my clothes that there was a ringworm-like swelling around the tick bite. By the next morning, I looked completely normal. After doing internet research, I concluded that I have Lyme.

That morning I saw my MD, who is a close personal friend. He still thought I was allergic to something, but was willing to treat me for Lyme as I suggested. The initial 100mg bid dose of doxy was later learned to be inadequate, and I'm now on 200mg bid.

My therapy started two months after the tick bite. I was lucky because my MD was willing to go along with my diagnosis. I'm an Optometric Physician, so I can prescribe further treatment for myself--but I like being able to bounce any ideas I have off my MD friend. I realize how very lucky I've been after reading so many sad case histories here and elsewhere. I believe that if not for this luck I'd be in a wheelchair by now, since before I went on the higher dose of doxy, in addition to the bizarre rashes, I'd experienced escalating vertigo, two episodes of heart arhythmias, and severe headaches.

So, I doubt that your rash is Bell's palsy or an allergy. It's probably the Lyme.

Good luck!

Thanks for your input Jim, Monica, Can't, and Lyme Mom...
It seems a little better today. I remember something like this a long time ago when first bit and assumed it was allergy. I think it is a herx and the Lyme is really taking a hit from the tx...

I hope..I will keep you posted the next few days...

Hi Daniella, sorry you're having problems.

First thing that came to my mind when I read your post was - Did you eat any shellfish? Like maybe oyster stuffing or shrimp cocktail? Also, perhaps a lot of sage in the stuffing?

I had Bell's Palsy a year and a half ago, never had any swelling with it. It started, for me, with muscle twitches and some tingling in one side of my face for a couple or three days (my husband said I had a strong chemical smell to my breath the day before the tingling started). Then a slightly crooked smile. Next day the whole right side of my face drooped and I couldn't blink the one eye.

I went to the Dr right away as I had seen Bell's Palsy before and knew what it was at that point. A friend of my mother's had it for over 6 months. The neurologist put me on an anti-malarial (?) and two other meds. He said if you catch it in the first 3 days the chance of the drugs working is very good. Mine was 80% better within a week and 100% better within 2 weeks. That's actually when I got my Lyme diagnosis.

Long story short, watch for the crooked smile, if that happens - go to the dr right away...

Take care of you Daniella [Smile]

Bell's Palsy was my first Lyme symptom. My lip started to tingle and over a few days the left side of my face became paralyzed. I could not smile, blink or pronounce certain letters like the B & P of Bell's Palsy. They should rename it so at least those affected can say what's wrong with them!

I did not have any swelling or other symptoms except for the lack of feeling/motion and lopsidedness. Now a 18 months later feeling continues to return and I'm getting closer to normal. I've had great progress from cold pulsed laser treatments which have restored feeling to the numb areas.
