I saw my dermatologist. He thinks that the hair loss with scalp itch could possibly be from the diflucan (I take it at least once a week-100mg). Could that even be possible?? I cant find any info on line relating to that. What I do know is that I took it this morning (just to see if I would get a reaction because for the last few days the itch has gone down ), and tonight it is flared up again-lots of itching. If thats the case, I will be stopping it immiediately!

If its a yeast die off, how the heck am I supposed to know the differnce between yeast and lyme?????? I mean when I flare on the antibiotics I start thinking "no, it must be yeast and I cant take the antibiotics because its making it worse!!!!!" Then I get told "no, its just a herx from the Lyme" What the heck am I supposed to believe????????? How in the heck am I supposed to know whether its Lyme or not????? I cant take this anymore, I really, really, really cant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm with you on that, Nal. Throughout my treatment I have periodic episodes of itchy rashes on my eyelids and wrists. (It's really attractive ;-) I posted here trying to figure out what it was. Some said herx, some said yeast, some said allergic reaction to the meds.

I now know it's not the meds, since this reaction has occurred several times on different meds. I recently took 200 mg of diflucan for 2 days and the rash flared worse than it ever has. It think it's a yeast die-off reaction. The one thing that has helped for certain, is to swab the skin with a weak solution of white vinegar and water. Sometimes it stings a little but it stops the itching when I can't stand it any more.

I also used extra podi patches on my feet in an effort to help remove toxins. The longer I use them, the lighter they become so I'm guessing that they help. Some stuff I just do on intuition combined with advice of docs and folks here.

Good luck and hang in there!

Nal,

So sorry you're having a difficult time of it of late.

I have itchy scalp and hair loss and I have'nt been on an abx for a few months now and have never taken diflucan...

I believe it has something to do with the lyme infection...and hey there isn't a whole heck of a lot we can do about it...

Maybe someone else will come on and give you some advice...tegril shampoo helped when it got really bad for me.
Daily or at least every other day seems to work for me with any ole shampoo.....zman

I just found it weird that it started again yesterday right after taking it. Maybe it is a coincidence, I don't know.

I just remembered about thyroiditis (Hashimoto's) and hair loss. Levothyroxine stopped my hair loss. My LLMD sez the thyroiditis was caused by LD. It took at little while to get the dosage correct but now I lose very little hair. I'm not sure if the itching fits with the thyroiditis picture but I thought I'd mention it just in case.

It is definitly from the Diflucan, I was loosing my hair by the handfulls.I suspected it was from one of the meds. I was taking,I looked at the side effects of Diflucan and sure enough it states can cause hair loss.I quit taking it imediatly and within a few weeks it stoped falling out. Terri

Did you happen to have a yeast test done and if so what were the results? And if you did what type of test was it?

No, how do I go about having a yeast test done? I still swear it is the diflucan directly. I mean I took it yesterday morning and by the evening, my scalp was really flared up.

There's several tests that can be done i.e.: Stool, blood, but my Dr. told me urine is the most acurate.

Don't know if anyone esle had any luck with these tests, but my Dr. thought I had a raging yeast infection in my intestions and so did I, but all the tests came back negative!

Anyone else have any luck with these tests?

That is interesting, and thanks for bringing it up.

I was taking Diflucan every weekend for about 6 months and by August was losing what I felt was a worrying amount of hair.

I have since stopped the Diflucan, I am still losing more than usual, I think, but also I have all over my head like a one inch growth of hair sticking out here and there.

Perhaps it is Diflucan that is responsible. I hadn't thought of that. Thank you.

Nal, sorry to hear your going through this. [cussing]

I am not on Diflucan, and I've been checked for systemic yeast, thyroid, and the hair still is thin. There was a time that my hair started coming back.

There was a time they thought it was the plaquenil, but my hair fell out before I even went on it.

I used to itch all over, and it drove me nuts!
That's gone now.

I'm not a doctor or medical person, but I do blieve it's from the lyme. If you look at the symptoms on the newbie links...you will see hair loss is one of them.

Try and hang in there. The more anxious you get, will only make things worse. I know it sounds easier said than done, but do the best you can.

Thoughts and prayers are with you. [group hug]

Nal,
I have been on Diflucan 200 MG every day for 30 days for a yeast infection and I haven't experienced any hair loss.

If you plan on taking it for any lengeth of time, make sure you Dr. does tests to monitor your liver. Very rare to have a problem but better to be safe then sorry.
