I've been taking a teaspoon twice a day since last Thursday. Anyone else take it? And what kind of results have you had with it?

I have been taking Nystatin for nearly three years. I take two tabs twice a day. It has been a truly remarkable drug for me. I had been taking antibiotics off and on for ten years before I was precribed nystatin. My health has improved immeasurabley since taking it. As long as you are on antibiotics, do not stop taking it. Antibiotics allow yeast to grow becasue they kill all the good bacterira we need to keep our digestive system functioning properly. Yeast hurts us in many ways. Good luck...

thanks, hopetoo. I've been on IV rocephin and various orals since April. I don't really have any yeast symptoms, but reading other posts, I realize that you can have problems without symptoms. I'll make sure to keep taking it. I'm happy you're doing better. Good luck to you too!!

Hi Angel Lady.

Many of us on here have Nystatin in our arsenals!! I might even venture to say "most" of us! It is definitely helpful to keep yeast at bay. And thrush, in particular.

However, for me at least, Nystatin was not enough.

I got a case of 'brown tongue-itis.'

It would not clear. Despite probiotic pills, Nystatin daily, yogurt, etc. I eat mainly seafood and vegetables; however, am not particularly righteous about the occasional carb I see wandering by.

Only a several-day course of Diflucan would help. However, Diflucan would cause my liver to start carrying little picket signs saying ' Work overload. Planned shutdown.'

I recently added a probiotic called Theralac, at the advice of my LLMD. One pill a day. It literally turned things around for me. I see now where at least some symptoms I attributed to Lyme were perhaps manifestations of yeast overgrowth.

It is also true that I am no saint about carbs and I suspect I'm in fact a very bad character indeed (said while guiltily sipping about a quarter-glass of Clos du Bois chardonnay).

Welcome to LymeNet!

[group hug]

Michelle

Thanks, Michelle M. I'm sorry to hear you have had such problems with yeast. I didn't realize that the antibiotics could cause so many problems!! I think I've been pretty lucky. Are carbs bad to eat with the antibiotics? I haven't had problems, but maybe I need to watch it so I don't push my luck! Any food advice anyone has is greatly appreciated. [lick]

IMO, your reaction to Nystatin will depend on whether your particular strain of candida is resistant to it or not.
I was placed on Nystatin for over two months with no result, and I am not on ABX except for Samento, an herbal ABX of sorts. Then my doctor did a stool analysis from Great Smokies lab, and found that my strain of candida was resistant to Nystatin, which is why it was not helping.
My GYN told me that one third of people are resistant to Diflucan, which explains why that also did not work.
I finally used the caprylic acid that my stool test indicated should work. It helped a lot, but only a yeast-starving diet and lots of probiotics (iFlora and Primal Defense) got it under control. It is still a daily battle. I take 30 billion units of iFlora daily...that's a lot of probiotics!

I take the 500000 unit tabs 4 x day. Would not do the ABX without it personally.

Be well,
