I was reading on the symptoms list how myoclonic jerking and twitching are lyme symptoms. How common is the jerking? I have had this for 11 years and my neuro said it's "nothing".

Sure feels like something to me!

Cutie,
I have this symptom pretty badly. I was getting better but yesterday started to get it back. Not sure if it is because I have been off my abx for two weeks or what. The abx seemed to make the jerking/twitching worse but now I am not sure. My doc is switching me from Biaxin to Ketex so I will let you know if it makes a difference with the myoclonic jerks. I am also seeing a neuromuscular doc since my regular neuro couldn't figure out what was going on. It may all be Lyme...I have weakness and muscle numbness on one side (right leg and arm) but twitching/jerking all over.

I'm still not sure my jerking/twitching is due to Lyme...my Dot Blot came back negative. But nonetheless, my internist believes I have it and is testing me for co-infections in a few weeks.

I will keep you posted... The jerks (hahaha) are annoying.

I have myoclonic jerking. If I am standing up when I jerk, then I fall down--not good. I take keppra and klonopin to try and control it. That seems to work unless I am very tired or am in a place that has a lot of stimuli(noise and crowds).

try to catch these episodes of video tape, close-up and from a disance; a remote control for the camera comes in real handy.

record for the express purpose of doing so.

You guys need to have your doctor look into your magneiusm levels and if found low get supplements or take a shot or something. The research Marnie has done seems to make more sense than anything else. Same for unexplained muscle pain.

Troup,

Magnesium is a good idea. The magnesium stopped my muscle twitches very quickly. However, my myoclonus jerks actually are small seizures from the brain and the magnesium hasn't helped that.

I've recently had my magnesium level checked and it was fine. And this is not a muscle twitch, it's a jerk of the whole extremity or whatever part of the body is affected at that particular moment.

Hello,
Myoclonus (involantary muscle jerking) was my number one symptom. I used to have it three or four times a day for hours at a time. After a year of treatment with antibiotics and the anticonvulsant Zonegran it is pretty much under control. I have a random couple second jerks every now and then. It is worse when I am fallling asleep.

Please check your B-12 levels as there is a link between myo and B-12 deficiency. I took B-12 shots for several months. I now take sublingual. Also, the suggestions to take magnesium are good.

A great site to check into is www.wemove.org. It has good descriptions and discusses treatments.

Also, do a search for myoclonus on lymenet and you will find lots of great discussions.

Please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] if you have more questions.

Take care,
Ms. Myo
