This is my first post. I was diagnosed with LD 6 months ago after 15 years of chronic pain, fatigue, and weight gain. I then started developing painful lipomas...first on my upper arms and thighs. Then they started appearing all over my body..not always encapsulated.
I am a nurse and did my research. I was sure that I had a rare condition called Dercum's Disease. My endocrinologist feels that these "lumps" are part of LD. Inflammation of fatty tissue?
So...PLEASE respond if you have developed these painful lipomas/fatty tissue also. This is so important to me!

I have many small lumps under the skin but they are not painful. I have had a few removed for biopsy and they are nothing significant. I don't know if it is the same thing that you have but I definataly started getting these lumps since getting lyme. pattiecake

Hi, I'm not an expert but I thought that subcutaneous nodules could be related to the coinfection bartonella.
Perhaps others will be able to shed some more light on this for you but if you go on the newbie links you will find info on Bart.
Good luck

I have Lyme with no coinfections, and when I gained a whole bunch of weight really fast for no apparent reason, as many of us do, I developed literally hundreds of small lipomas, on my trunk and thighs. One was biopsied and was benign. Mine do not hurt, so it may not be what you have, but it is strange, esp. on my thighs, which are very muscular and feel like they have rocks in them with all those bumps. Klutzo

So sorry for your illness. I have had Lyme/Ehrlichia for 3 years now. I have been on lots of different meds, with assorted side-effects. 2 months ago I started Minocin. I finally herxed with it. Then I began noticing hard, hot, red lumps on the sides and backs of me calves. Local Doc did a punch biopsy and sent to OSU. The result was Erythema Nodosum. The problem being it could be caused from an abx. or the Lyme itself. I stopped the Minocin. The lumps slowly went away. Then several days before Christmas, they came back. Hope this helps!

Yes, I know exactly what you are talking about. I had 3 on my right buttocks removed about a year ago. One was the size of a plum and it has come back. I have another one on the front of my right thigh above the knee. They were benign and lipomas but will probably have these removed at some point as the one on my buttock is beginning to hurt. I asked the doctor if I couldn't just have liposuction to remove it and he laughed and said "No we have to slice and dice!" I argued and lost the other time and the anethesiologist gave me a general when the surgeon had told me I could have a local shot and IV sedation.

I have them all over bod. My doc calls them FM/fibromyalgia lumps??What the heck does that mean. Some that were size of peas, are as big & hard as golf balls, starting hurt pressing on the nerves now. Surg. while back just called them benign cysts, did not do any biopsy. Said I would have scars all over if he started to remove. I just wanted atleast 1 tested, they have to be something, not saying cancer. All I can say is at clinic helped at at least 75% of patients dxed with FM had lumps. Are they Lyme cyst form that we can feel??? Hard to believe docs just look, feel shake their heads. That is that???? Think they would have some interest with all our problems. I would be if still working in Med field....Hmmmmm Kerry Wish could be more help........

Thank you for all the replies! Keep them coming! I tend to think that the "lumps" or "lipomas" occur more with women, due to our fat distribution...or else the men don't mention them!

I had a lipoma removed this past summer. It was on my lower back, to the left of my spine. It was the size of a golf ball. The dermatologist removed it in the office and showed it to me......just a bunch of fatty tissue. I believe it is starting to grow back, although my husband says it is scar tissue. I had it removed because it was insightly...you could see it when I wore a bathing suit. It also bothered me when I would lean back, driving, for example. I've always felt that it was Lyme connected as it appeared about 20 years ago when I first began feeling ill. I've tested positive for Lyme and Babesia many times. I also have a cyst on my forehead that appeared at about the same time. It is not a lipoma. You can see it and definititely feel it. It is hard. I won't have that removed bc it will leave a scar.

I also have had many of these "lipomas" all over my body for many years. They seem to be increasing in number lately so I'm thinking of having one biopsied just so I know for sure they are harmless as the docs seem to think. They range in size from pea to grape, some are painful some are not. Interestingly, back when my Lyme was still untreated and symtoms were at their very worst, these lumps were very painful for awhile.
One more thing caused by Lyme I'm thinking along with my kidney stones and all the typical Lyme symptoms I have had. Abx hasn't reduced or changed them yet, maybe in time I hope. Anyone else with these lumps?

My hubby has them all over his upper legs, hips and back. Some were huge - size of a small orange, only flatter). He had the two biggest removed but he still has a lot of them.
He had severe night sweats and nycturia (peeing by night) since his childhood. Some years ago, he got bitten by a tick with a bullseye rash, so now he has Lyme for sure. What he had exactly before, we don't know, but I suspect Babesia, since his night sweats and high blood pressure went away with Babs treatment. BUT: his nycturia is still here.
A German Lymie with lots of Lipomas told me he is convinced it is from Bartonella.
I know a man with psychological problems (depressions and panik attacks) who also has lipomas everywhere.
Whatever may cause it (Lyme, Babs or Bart or anything else), I'm convinced it is an infection and the body tries to wrap a capsule of grease around the buggers to capture them.

Hello, I have a lipoma on my back right hip. It was surgically removed a couple of years ago and is now growing back. I have often wondered if there is any connection to Lyme.
Take care, Ms. Myo

I think that the dipose tissue is just another site that the infectious agent migrates to and sets up an inflammatory response. One of the many "Faces of Lyme".
Actually, my lumps are less dense and painful, and are decreasing in size since taking antibiotics for 7 months. Posts: 89 | From Northern Virginia | Registered: Oct 2005

I guess one way to know if the "lipomas" are Lyme-related, is to request that the pathologist check for tick-borne diseases.

My son had a pea-sized lump on his forehead for about 3 years, doctor said it was nothing. Then we found out he has had lyme for 5 years, and within 5 weeks of beginning abx., this lump has disappeared completely. Related??

Gees! I just found one of these buggers yesterday! Wondered but never would have found any info without you all! My Lyme-lump is tiny and on my right hip, not painful. You know some people have little "fatty cysts" on their arms and other places. Hubby has one. He's had it for years, but I never had any. I always thought those cysts (in non-Lyme people) were something you had or didn't have, like how people have cold sores, so I definitely think they're Lyme-related.
