I have been on i.v. doxy 200 mg since October. I have my blood tested every 3 weeks to track my progress. The test from 6 weeks ago the doctor told me that my b.u.n. level was a little high, then 3 weeks ago the same thing. Then due to some different symptoms that I was experiencing he wanted to double my doxy. Well last week on the blood test my b.u.n. was so high the pharmacist phoned the doctors office and me and said I needed to stop my doxy. I called the pharm. back and talked to him about it. He confirmed that the doctor would have been wrong in doubling my dosage.
Has anyone else had similar problems on doxy?
Plus, the doctor wanted to change one of my orals from zithromax to ketek. I was willing to go along with that, since I've been on zith. since about June and have started having ringing in my ears. The other oral is diflucan, because of candida in the bloodstream. From taking so many antibiotics for so long, since 11-04.
Any help would be appreciated.
Does it ever end?
Thanks, Bill

There used to be a good free website for the nurses PDR that was the best place I found for telling the effect of various drugs on blood tests like this. Unfortunately, it has now gone to pay site. However, if you know any nurses or have access to this book, it would tell you the answer. One problem is that if you are taking more than one drug, they can have different effects on tests and who knows what happens with combos.
Many libraries have the other PDR, the one used by physicians, but it is a lot more technical and not as easy to find this info as in the nurses PDR.
Hope you find the answer.

BUN mainly shows how the kidneys are clearing toxins out of the blood and is used with pother tests to determine kidney function in general. (Urea is the by product of part of the body's metabolism.)
What was your BUN number? And what about GFR rate and creatinine?
Have you been on abx solid for a year?

Some medicines are processed/cleared by the kidneys, others by the liver or a combination of both. fluconazole and zithromax are mainly processed by the liver if i am not mistaken. Doxycycline mainly by the kidneys. I am also taking doxy (along with a macrolide, roxithryomycine in my case) and my urea was borderline, has gone up a bit as well, although i am only doing 200 mg a day of the doxy.
Switching from zithro to ketek will probably not effect the BUN result much, dropping the doxy would probably do the trick or lowering the dose....
