Hey folks:

I lived in Canada for a bit in the late 80's. While there, I discovered a great remedy for my constant strep throat -- it was an over-the-counter liquid I would gargle with, and it would abort the strep throat. Great stuff. Came back to the states with my bags filled with the stuff.

CANNOT for the life of me remember the name of it. I know we don't have it here, and it was this deep red liquid. Anyway, does that ring a bell to anyone? I've been searching online without much luck. It wasn't advertised as fixing strep throat, just some sore throat thing I think. But I do remember the color... Might have just been an antiseptic mouthwash for that matter...

In any event, ANY help would be awesome.

Thanks.

Hi

I'm glad I read this post...I just remembered my prescription has been sitting at the pharmacy for two days.

When I go I'll see if I can find anything that may fit your description and let you know.

Thanks JimW,

Appreciate the effort on your part and look forward to any info. I was living in the Hamilton/Toronto area at the time, but I suspect it would have been available throughout the country.

could it be cepacol? or betadine? These are the only two I can think of at the moment.

Also......I am curious about "constant strep".....my throat is raw and sore ALL THE TIME..I wonder if this is what I have? did you have a throat swab cultured?

nope. not cepacol or betadine.

for some reason, i've always been quite susceptible to strep throat infections (waaaaaaay pre Lyme), and I've had asthma since 5 so not a great combo platter.

the only things that have ever made a difference are (A) this mystery liquid from Canada (I can see the bottle in my mind's eye, its just not giving up the name!), and (B) eating something with A TON of cayenne pepper when a sore throat appears.

strep feels like you are juggling razor blades with your tonsils and yields a positive result on the test that they can do at your doc's or any clinic.

ok thanks so much, I will request a test.

I have had chronic sore throat for over a year now, and it hasnt subsided after six months of abx treatment for Lyme.

I will take a good hard peek at the pharmacy shelf tomorrow, I want to try this red wonder-liquid! Whats the bottle look like?

Hi

Well, didn't see anything that fit your description that hasn't already been mentioned here.

I'll check out a couple of other pharmacies over the next couple of days and report back.

Thanks JimW -- appreciate your efforts quite a bit.

I'll look forward to your report. I'd check both the mouthwash area and the cold remedy/sore throat sections of the store if I could... all I remember is that it was a deep red liquid. I'm sure the bottle style/shape has changed in 15+ years, so I'm not even going to try to describe it...

Thanks to any other Canadian folks who might be on the hunt on my behalf. ROCK ON!

Yow, check this out!

".... Dr. Lida Mattman, PhD, professor emeritus from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI., and author of the medical microbiology textbook entitled 'Cell Wall Deficient Forms: Stealth Pathogens'.........stated that if streptococcus is present, it must be treated first before the Lyme is treated because Borrelia feeds on strep. In other words, the strep stimulates the growth of Borrelia. Furthermore, it is impossible to culture Borrelia whenever strep is present because strep is a faster growing bacterium and it will overgrow the culture medium as a 'contaminate', obscuring the presence of Borrelia."

INTERESTING!

PS Still on the hunt for the magical red elixir.....

Hey Dura,
This is such a long shot but...

We have this awful tasting medicine for coughs, called Buckleys. It would cure anyone of anything! Horrible, blasts you out of your chair.

BUT...the damn stuff works. It about takes your head off, and the throat as well. And isn;'t that what you want?

Nothing hurts after Buckleys....cause you don't want to have to take it again!

I'm from the States and when I first moved to Canada, THIS is what everyone said I had to have.
Eh??

Does this sound familiar?

I looked up Buckleys to see if this was it, but it doesn't seem to be the case. I do VERY much appreciate everyone's detective work on this issue! I'll have to buy everyone "a round" if we find the darn stuff.

I'm also trying to find some of the folks I went to grad school with to see if they can check it out for me in case it is unique to Ontario for some odd reason...

Hi

I wonder if it is chloraseptic? It is red and it is a spray for sore throats. Maybe they have this in a gargle as well, but I don't know. It has been around for many years.

Take Care
