I take Ceftin 500 mg twice a day and my probiotics a few hours later, also twice a day. I recently developed a yeast infection (probably cause I ate too many sweets during the holidays)! Just wondering what the time frame should be to take the probiotics - I think someone told me at least 2 hrs after Ceftin. Do you think increasing probiotics will help clear up the yeast?

You should ask your doctor for Nystatin while you are on ABX. I personally will not take ABX without it. As for increasing the probiotics, sure, it will have some benefit, but with ABX, they get killed so quickly that you should consider ways to supress the yeast as significant in your treatment protocol. Natural options exist too - garlic - caprylic acid, etc., but I would not be without my Nystatin.

If I might ask.Do you take nystatin powder & how much & how often.?
I have an appt. with my doc tommorow and would like to talk to him about this.
I am pulsing with diflucan now for yeast but worry that the yeast over time will become resistant to diflucann/
I think nystatin has fewer side effects on the liver too?
Thanks
dana

I agree. Dana, I know you asked Scott, but since he may be snoozing, I'll tell you that I take the tablets.

They have zero effect on the liver. They work only in the digestive tract.

Dogmom, You may want to buy some Yeast Fighters by Twinlab, or something else to kill out the yeast. Get back to your diet [I know... I cheated too!] and remember that the probiotics do not KILL yeast.

You can get Nystatin in Swish and swallow too, or the dry powder and mix it yourself. You can get Nystatin creams too, and troches if you have thrush! Works great.

I'm only on 1 type of abx-- Rifampin 600mg a day.
My Doc has me taking 1 million units of Acidolpholus 3x daily in addition to Fluconazole once a week.
The Fluconizole kills yeast & inhibits yeast build up. The Acidolpholus helps put back the friendly bacteria in the intestines. He said this is absolutely critical. I wouldn't go without it.
Best wishes & prayers for renewed health,
Lisa

Question:
My situation is different than most of you.

I hear most using acidophilus for treatment of yeast in the large intestine, but I do not have a large intestine.

So question is: Will "A" work in the small intestine too? Or is taking it not important at all for someone like me?

Thanks,
Jim. [hi]
