I just started taking Probenecid 3xday along with my Amoxy (1,000mg 3xday) and my Plaquenil. I am scared of this drug since it is used to sort of "clog up" the kidneys to keep blood levels of Amoxy higher.
Anyone want to share their experiences or take this wild ride with me?

Might be just me 'n you, baby!!!
I haven't seen much "traffic" on the board to suggest anyone else is using it with their Amoxicillin.
Though I have seen references in the literature (ILADS?) to suggest it for boosting blood levels.. dunno why other docs don't use it.
Doesn't seem to have any effect on me one way or t'other. I've skipped it for periods of time thinking it might be responsible for this or that, and its absence changed nothing, so there you go.
Love,
Michelle

For me I found it much easier to just up the ammox... I was prescribed the probenecid but never took it in the end. My thinking was why take something to up my levels of Ammox when the easier solution is to take more ammox...
unless you have stomache issues and cannot tolerate more ammox maybe you could give that a trial with your LLMD's permission of course.
I'm looking for a buddy re: this issue too... or at least information.
I just started taking Augmentin 1750mg. (875mg. 2x/day) with 4000mg. Amoxicillin (2000mg. 2x/day). Have been reading on the forum about Probenecid and wonder if I need to add it to what I'm currently taking?
Some have taken up to 15 grams or more - should I ramp up?
Many write that they don't take Probenecid because the Clav keeps Amoxy in the bloodstream longer...
Advice would be great.

Michelle~ YEah, I am thinking...how come no one else? But I have read stuff about Probenecid being an effective tool for heightening blood levels of ABX even for NON Lyme stuff.
Maybe the others just got WELL on this regimen and aren't around here anymore?
Christine~ I was told that you could NOT up the amount of ABX to equal the blood levels the probenecid would cause. It would be EXTREMELY harsh on your entire body.
Lymebites~ What is CLAV? Have you talked over the probenecid thing with your LLMD? Seems like it might be worth it, if you are feeling like you need MORE ABX flowing.
Everyone~ I posted about having these surgary burps, but no one responded. I didnt have them today. Instead I had terrible and immediate onset of Diareah---like while shopping at Trader Joe's---thank gawd they have nice clean bathrooms! It could be coz I ate PHO soup (my fav food) that might have had MSG in it, but I feel WIPED OUT. My tum feels totally stripped bare. So I took some extra acidophilus and I will eat yogurt for dinner.
Anyone else getting the tum tum yuck?
I am gonna do more research on probenecid tonight. Will report any important findings.

Probenecid made me puck twice. Weak & shakie also a couple of times after taking it.
It is a helper drug and is supposed to help with abx penetration.
It was worth the pucking.Definetly.
I took it for 6 months & had labs every two weeks. It didn't effect my kidneys, but everyone's different
But never ever take it without food.I learned this the hard way.

PQ~ I had pain for about 2 minutes a few hours after my first dose. I am so familiar with abdominal pain (coz I have endometriosis, ovarian cysts, adhesions, fibroids, a twisted colon...you name it) and it felt like it was on my left ovary, but DEEPER, which would indicate the kidney...but I rode out the pain, it wasnt toooo bad and I havent had any since. I had labs done on Thursday, so we'll see if anything is going haywire!
Everyone~ I didnt like what I saw/read on some past threads about Probenecid. But I just KNOW that my LLMD wouldnt put me thru this if he didnt think it was the BESTEST way to get at it for now. HE has his own daughter on it and is a pharmacist who really understands the workings of the medications on the body and the disease.
My tummy feels better today. I figured out what happened...check this out:
It was a MAJOR caffiene overdose. MAJOR! I decided to celebrate a personal victory and went for vietnamese food and treated my self to a vietnamese coffee. It is like an esspresso with condensed milk. Only the waitress put about 7 times as much coffee in the little thing that the water drips thru. I didnt really think about it as I drank it. But that caffiene went straight into me like an IV. I was up almost alllll night and I had shakes and wild emotions and panic attacks.
Basically I had 7 espressos in one sitting!!!!!
Never do that. Ever.
I am gonna keep the faith that this particular regimin is gonna help me towards real healing and progress. Will update as things change. Right now mostly headaches, twitching, floaters, brain fog, and tingling at the base of my neck. Less muscle and nerve pain.

trails - Clav is Clavulanate - that and amoxicillin combine to make Augmentin. I've read that the Clavulanate helps keep the Amoxy levels highter...
I am going to call my LLMD about taking Probenecid with the Aug + Amoxy. I have had some tum tum yuck (diarrhea) with the above combo since last week but it's tolerable.
I always take my abx. without food. Is it just the Probenecid that should be taken with food. I figure as long as my gut can take it I'd rather not dilute the meds.
pq - I have had kidney/flank pain with Lyme disease, even before I was definitively diagnosed and started meds. It's definitely made its way into that organ system. Haven't had the flank pain for a couple of months now though.
Am still wondering how high I can (should) go with the Amoxy - currently 4000mg. with 1875 Augmentin. There's a huge difference between that and 15 grams. Any suggestions anyone?
Thanks!

i also take amoxy 875 mg 3 times daily with probenicid per my llmd. I started on 1 month of 875 amoxy 2x daily then 2 weeks of 3x daily. I have taken the probenicid for 1 month now and have one or 2 more months to go on this. I will most likely do only one more month. I have luckily responded well to this treatment and am basically symptom free right now. My major issue is yeast I need to get under control after stopping the abx.
As for the probenicid...I stopped after 1 week of use because of worsened intestinal issues but resumed after a couple of weeks and things were fine. Do yourself a real big favor and drink tons of water when you are taking it...it tells you on the bottle to drink lots for a reason.

I took probenecid one gram with amoxil six grams for four months. I am usually very sensitive to medications and did not have a problem with this combination.
I stopped taking the probenecid when a second antibiotic (zithro) was added in the fifth month of treatment.

FWIW,some of my kidney 'story' to regal ya'll renally, really :
prior to lyme, no kidney problems, congenital, or acquired.
lyme and/or other tbds, if any, alone, affected my kidneys, the rt.kidney much more so than the left kidney. the rt. kid., being more so affected may have to do with the fact that i snapped the tick on the back of my right leg,Bb having made a "B-line" straight up.
the kidney effects seemed to slowly build up until about the 10th month of initial infection, i wound up in the e.r. with a spastic rt.kid.
parenthetically, standard doxy Tx started approx. 6 days after snapping tick, and no abx until the following april, at which time i had a course of augmentin for something else.
e.r. staff deliberately insulting, patronizing, as in, "who are YOU?! "how do YOU know where your kidney is?!" when i put my hand over rt. flank area;visually, one could see the flank area pulsing out and in slowly, as if something where moving under my skin. (of course, it was my rt. kidney).
after 4hr. wait in the e.r., during which time, the doc and social worker, knowing my lyme history of months duration, their brains squirming like toads, pretending all the while to be going to the ends of the known universe to "get at the bottom" of things, tried to verbally wangle me onto the "flight deck."
W-e-l-l n-o-w,having once been on the aircraft carrier, Tripoli, i declined their esteemed invitation to my homicide by their medical neglect by them. and left the e.r. with a script for 4-5 days of doxycycline, and a referral to the very same id doc with whom, in a phone conversation the previous day, refused to treat me under uncle sam's insurance coverage, ending our conversation with a sincere "good luck..."!
by the time of the e.r. visit, wobenzyme arrived in the mail, and i didn't take it prior to the visit so as not to confound results of blood work, and other tests, were they to do testing . the doc took no blood of any kind, and no urninalysis.
water bottle in hand,i left the e.r., swallowed 2-3 tablets of wobenzyme, and got 40-50% relief form the kid. pain, and other associated sensations, but then hit a plateau in relief by week's end.
a very reluctant default to a traditional chinese herbal medicine doc., produced a 90% decrease in rt.kid. pain, and sensations by the end of 6, or so weeks; by the 4th day of tx, i felt even more relief form the kidney sensations. i could feel the circulation coursing through my kidneys, the rt.one more so than the left one. pain and assoc. sensations, while diminishing, variably increased and decreased.
to-date i still feel the prescence of my rt. kidney, but no pain and sensations like i had.
lemon-flavored drinks that are flavored with lemon oil or limonene cause coolness and slight pain(achiness) in rt. kid. e.g. lemon flavored magnesium citrate, but magnesium citrate in powder form as i capsules do not produce this sensation. google search of 'limonene + kidney,' produced at least on abstract on mice stating that limonene caused damage to some renal structure. chemically, limonene is a monoterpene, and has two molec. structures. maybe one struct causes the problem, and the other does not;or, one is more so problematic than the other struct.
Bromelain once quelled oral-ceftin-induced kidney pain, and associated sensation of hot-cold, and other sensations by 60-70%. i did the bromelain out of desperation, a last-ditch attempt to do something before another e.r. visit, and it worked. i had vaguely recalled a pharmacist saying that bromelain was good for the kidney, for some conditions/reasons. i still don't recall what he said.
at first i took only one bromelain cap(500mg.), waited some short period of time and got little, if any, relief, then, i think i ate 2 more caps, sometime afterwhich i got the relief.
one 3-4 day i.v. rocephin course produced severe r.t kid. pain, and other sensations, and a total body thing were i thought i would be dead by week's end. i made a B-line to the chinese herbal doc.(tcm), and saved my own a$$ again.
this black ink on white background belies the horrible state i was in. my DX was "lyme encephalitis."
probenicid is good a good drug for its purpose. i just don't trust it for myself.

BROMELAIN~ This is so strange! Bromelain is the enzyme that found in Pinapple. I had a hankering for it and bought a Pinapple the other day. YUMMIE! I usually dont eat fruit coz of the sugar, but I am pretty well attuned to what the bod needs if it is craving something. (i will satisfy all cravings Except sugar or alcohol...and it seems to be a good system for me)
Anyways....thought was funny after what PQ wrote! Trails
