I'm wondering if anyone else has run into this serious complication -- clostridium difficile -- while on IV abx. My husband became really ill and had to be in the hospital for a few days, with dehydration, fever, diarrhea, nausea. His recovery is going very slowly, although he is improving. From reading up on c-diff it looks like once you've had it, you have to be very careful about taking abx. He's now on Vancomycin as well as probiotics, Questran, saccaromyces boullardi, etc., doing everything he can to get better. He thinks that over the holidays he wasn't careful enough about taking probiotics and also ate too much junk. And who knows, maybe he picked it up from a public bathroom.
We want him to be able to resume his IV abx treatment once he's fully recovered, but we're apprehensive about the c-diff recurring. Has anyone else dealt with this? Thanks.

Me again. I just saw the thread on this. Sorry I didn't see it sooner. Any info would still be appreciated. Thanks.

When your taking traditional abx your declaring war on all bacteria in your system. clostridium difficile and MRSA are two bacteria that have become resistant and are fighting back with a toxic arsenal of their own (not to mention borrelia). On top of this yeast and other bad guys get the chance to take over and systemic candida is not good!
The protocal i'm on is silver and oil of oregano with probiotic replacement. Both products are good against a wide range of pathogens (not just bacteria) and attack bacteria in a different manner.(thus no toxic retribution.) imo it's the safer way to go and if abx are needed on top of this treatment that should be ok. I haven't read about any bad interactions between abx and silver or oregano. best of luck!

I was on IV antibiotics, but had to discontinue due to a fungal infection in the picc line. Put on an antifungal drug (voraconazole). Ended up getting a mild case of C. diff (well, maybe a moderate case.)
I am relapsing lyme wise. I will wait one more week, and then my LLMD wants me to have an IM Bicillan LA shot; to prevent further relapse. Then I see him a week after that.
The idea behind waiting another week is to give my gut some more chance to heal up. The reason for IM Bicillan is that it involves the gut very little, so the chance of C. diff recurring is smaller.

I had c.diff last year and it has destroyed my GI tract. I hate to say it, but c.diff is really nasty and can cause alot of damage. Its left me in cramping abdominal pain and nausea for a year with cold sweats. You must make sure you are treated long enough for the c.diff because it has a very high relapse rate. Usually after 4-6 weeks of vancomycin you can take Questran for awhile to bind to the c.diff (and Lyme) toxins. Florastor (sacc. boulardi) beneficial yeast has action against c.diff as well.
After the gut has healed, you can try things like IV Vancomycin (for Lyme) and Bicillin injections. Everything else puts you at very high risk of relapse, especially abx like clindamycin. The use of PPI's in the latest research shows its bad to use them. Make sure when they do a stool test to re-check you that BOTH toxin A& B are tested. Take lots of probiotics, and mix up the brands, and get some Florastor. Here is where I get mine, and I take 250 mg 2x a day.
