Will this ever stop, I was on doxy 200 Mg for 3 weeks, stopped for a week saw a LLMD and she prescribed 400 Mg of doxy while she awaits my western blot results to come back, should be back in a week from today. My problem is that my swallowing is killing me, feels like the muscles dont want to work although i am able to swallow, feels like there i something on the left side of my throat.
For some reason i get this pressure on my and the back of my head, feels like my neck is weak on the left side also. My left shoulder is weak also, feels weird and detached. I guess i just need some support, I am at work and stuggling right now. I have been on 400 Mg of Doxy since last saturday and have been having trouble swallowing on and off since two weeks ago when my neuro pulled on my neck to check my strength.
I got an EMG and it turned out normal, same with NCS. Does this swallowing problem ever go away? feels like my tongue is swullen and my soft palate on the left side is dark dark red. IS there anything i can do to help my situation? Is 400 Mg of doxy enough or should i up it to 500? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There was mention of swallowing difficulties as a potential symptom in the recent Lyme Times - first time I had really read that, but it appears that it can be Lyme-related.

I have swallowing difficulties as well as a feeling of a swollen throat. I went to an Ear, Nose Throat doctor. He said my lingual tonsils were swollen. These are the tonsils at the back of the tongue.
He did a swab of the tongue and cultured it, nothing showed up. He had a scan taken of my sinuses and I had some thickening of something in the sinus cavity. He said it was either mucus or an infection. He had me irrigate my sinuses for a month. That caused sores in my nasal passage which I still have after months and months.
I've heard that Bb hides out in the sinuses. I think I have a colony there that is causing drainage down my throat and an infection in my throat and tongue area.
The one product that I've found that gives me some relief (doesn't take it away) is called LarreaRX. I don't know why it helps or if it would help others but it does help to some degree. I ran out for a week and I could hardly swallow. It is kind of expensive at ~$35 for 60 pills. I typically take 4 per day if it's really bad and 2 per day if it's under control.
I don't know why yours would be exacerbated by your period other than menses often causes symptoms of various illnesses to get worse.
Arsenicum Alb 30C: Exhaustion, great weakness, headache, heart palpitations, weak limbs, paralysis of lower limbs, poisoned wounds, high fever, throat swollen.
Sorry I can't be more helpful but I do know that difficulty swallowing and swollen throat are symptoms that are associated with lyme. Regards, Terry

My daughter's swallowing problem has improved steadily on antibiotics.
Hang in there! It is miserable at first, but it does get better.

I had terrible swallowing problems and shoulder pain. Both have resolved completely with treatment/abx. The shoulder did require manual adjustments by a skilled bodyworker.

What does the swallowing problem feel like? I feel like there is something stuck or lodged in my throat. Especially when I look down. Does this sound familar to anyone? I also have pressure in my head and severe neck stiffness.

I noticed you haven't posted in a while. How did your EMG go? How are you doing?

Hi Luke,
I was wondering what had happened to you - I know you were going through a very difficult time when you last posted, struggling with the ALS vs. Lyme issue.
I think we used to see the same LLMD but sounds like you have a different one.
Anyway, as Scott mentioned, I think one of the Lyme Times articles on the vagus nerve mentioned swallowing problems. I was reading because I have various possibly vagus nerve issues, but not the swallowing one. But it sure affects lots of parts of the body and functions!
I did have lots of upper arm weakness pre-treatment, it improved on one side at first, now after quite some time on treatment both sides seem stronger. It was hard to work at the computer!
Keep us posted, Jill

Yes you can have swallowing problems with Lyme. As I am typing this response I have such severe burning and swallowing problems it feels as if I am choking. I try to ignore it but at times it is impossible. I have tried physical therapy, chiropractic and am about to try acupuncture because it is so disturbing. It is probably the vagus nerve that is affected because every time someone looks down my throat-about 10 ENT's, they never find anything.

If it feels like you have a lump in your throat you need to have your thyroid tested to rule that out as a possible cause of the swallowing difficulties.
Amkdiaries,
Have you been tested for reflux -- the burning could possibly be a symptom of acid reflux.
Hubby has swallowing difficulties from time to time -- most often seems to happen when he gets choked trying to swallow water -- symptom seems to have improved now that transient Bell's Palsy is mostly gone. Definitely think it was/is a cranial nerve issue for him.

I agree with the thyroid issue. I had to a a scope of throat and stomach because of swallowing and burning issues. I went to a new LLMD and he ordered a thyroid scan. He said lyme can attack the thyroid (what a surprise!). FYI all my thyroid results T3, T4, TSH were normal, but my thyroid is enlarged. Hurts to swallow, eat, and is bothersome when I lay down. Funny this subject came up, I just got home from my thyroid scan. Good Luck

I was wondering if the swallowing thing was a normal problem from LYME myself.
I feel like I have to try really hard to swallow. I don't have food stick or anything, it is just hard.
And I have major pressure in my head and all my joints and muscles hurt. They pop, crack, and stick all the time.
Yesterday was a crazy day for me. I couldn't get any of my words out right, people at my work thought I was hitting the "bar" at lunchtime. LOL I wish that was all it was! Posts: 14 | From Houston, Texas | Registered: Sep 2006

hi luke! I was wondering where you went too!
Have you had an MRI? I thought you had been run through the mill of tests, but maybe didnt have a brain an upper spinal MRI?
reason I ask is coz there is also Arnold Chiari malformation to rule out. It can only be diagnosed thru MRI. Good it -- there are some excellent sites out there on it.
My sis has both arnold chiari and lyme and she suffered a lot of similar symptoms as you.
buena suerte, trails

till you make it threw this you may want to do some soups
you can throw just about anything into a pot & then puree it.
Chicken with veggie broths or pea soups are my favorites.
it does get better with treatments.
I used to have to chew my flagel! Yek!
