Hi all,

I just woke up with a nasty sore throat (worsened from yesterday) which feels like the beginning of a cold. I was wondering, do people recommend taking a break from abx while sick with a cold? Either way, what is the reasoning? I'm on Ketek and Omnicef currently (been on abx for 15 months, total) and all the herxing is done for those two. But I was wondering whether stopping them for a while would help or hurt my body's attempt to fight this cold.

Also, I've been on a very strict no sugar/no carb candida diet for a while (it's helped substantially) but lozenges sound very comforting right now. Does anyone know of any candida-friendly alternatives?

Thanks for all the help and information that all of you have already given to this newbie in many previous threads. I feel much more able to take on lyme with the help of all the knowledgable, friendly and compassionate people here.

-Mike

Sorry you're feeling icky. I don't know how to advise on the abx question.

For sore throat I use Throat Coat or Throat Comfort Tea (can't remember the exact name, bit it's something like that) from Yogi Teas. Most health food stores or healthy grocery stores (Whole Foods, etc.) carry this brand. I believe it's the licorice in the tea that helps with the throat pain. Anyway, It works well. No sugar in it.

Hope ya get to feeling better,
robi

Robi,

Funny you mentioned that tea. Before seeing any replies to my query I went out to the local co-op grocery and bought a box of Throat Coat, returned home, made a mug of it, and sat down to read your reply as the tea soothed my throat. I must have been picking up your vibes.

The licorice also makes it among the most flavorful teas I've had. Just great. I bought Traditional Medicinals brand, but it seems like pretty much the same thing.

Thanks!

-Mike

If its just a cold I stock with my abx b/c they help so that I dont let it get into a sinus infection... The only way I do not take them when I am ill is if I am sick to my stomache and could not keep them down.

I use Zicam over the counter homeopathis cold remedy... It cuts my colds im half!! Great stuff!

ALso I use lots of steam with tea tree oil, vicks vapor rub and it usually passes...

Biggest peice of advise would be: Get some zicam....

Feel Better!

Maybe your cold is really a herx? That's the way I've begun to view a few of my cold-like symptoms. Sometimes they never fully evolve into a cold.

But maybe that's because I, too, use Zicam swabs. I was going to recommend them, but Christine already beat me to it. I second her recommendation. They're great. Use them at the very first hint of symptoms and sometimes that's the end of it.

Forgot to add, I wouldn't stop abx for your cold. With signs of a compromised immune system (i.e., the cold) I think that would just be inviting the ke,ets to start over running you.

Thanks to everyone for the advice, especially regarding the abx-- very sensible. I'll look into the Zicam. I highly doubt it's a herx as mine are pretty distinct.

I'm feeling a lot better after tea and several bowls of beef tongue soup (yummm.)

Hi Mike,

For a sore throat, try ginger tea, with real ginger. Cut it into small pieces, mash it with a garlic press over the mug, put the remaining pieces in a tea ball, then pour the hot water into the mug. Also a good way to get liquids into you.

I have a cold too, the first one I've had in a couple of years. It is possible I got sick because I stopped taking probiotics for a couple of weeks after taking them for 1-1/2 years (I also stopped the meds 1-1/2 months ago to try herbal treatment). A friend of mine told me that probiotics are actually good for the immune system.

Hope you're feeling better.
