Ive only posted a few times but I do come to read daily and do research. You have all helped us more then I could say, thank you all so much for sharing what you all have gone thru and are going thru-I light a candle for you all each day and hope you each have a better day then the last.
On a good note, no its a GREAT note, my son started IV yesterday. Hes now on Ceftriaxone 2000mg 1 tme daily at home. They are doing it by mid-line in his arm and altho its been a total disaster getting the line in we are very hopefull this will work. He will have a regular IV line in over the weekend till the supplies for the mid-line arrive on Monday but it isnt that big a dael to us since we have waited literaly yrs for this moment. He had to be stuck 4 times yesterday and everytime the mid-line needle was started it retracked and the nurse ended up having to do the regular IV line.
I just have a couple ?s I hope you can all help us with. 1. with the mid-line, shouldnt that be cleaned daily? they are telling us to leave the dressing on for a week and then they change it. It doesnt sound right to me to only have it cleaned and re-dressed once a week. How did those of you that had a mid-line do the cleaning and dressing? 2. what are the chances of co-infection with the Ceftriaxone?...should my son be on an oral antibiotic along with the IV? I have heard and read mixed researh on this.
Again thank you all for the help, advice and support, even those weve never talked with personaly have helped in some way just by readng all your posts..............Peace Y

Hi Tina,
Many have no trouble at all with PICC's. Ports, etc., so hopefully your son is numbered among them.
He's starting on a basic treatment protocol of 2 grams. I would watch the herx's as many start on 1gm then ramp it up after a period of time. I'm assuming the doc doesn't want to add other meds to the equation until he see's his reaction to the IV's first. Very common.
Keep an eye on his gall bladder as well. Some doc's prescribe actigall and do routine, periodic blood work to test kidneys, gall bladder, liver, etc.
Additonally, my son's IV dressing was changed on a weekly basis as well. This seems to be the standard. It sounds as if you'll be changing the dressing yourselves or is there a Home nurse who's performing this function ? Be careful to disinfect that area thoroughly and keep it dry.
You can purchase long plastic sleeves or the home IV co. may provide them for showering/bathing. Good luck.

NP40 is right on the ball with everything, I second it all.
The coinfections can be treated after IV is finished or during. They are treated with oral ABX.
I would personally wait till AFTER as the IV is very draining for your system, and treating with orals on top of IV is a lot to handle especially for a child!
I had the same experience with the first insertion of my picc line...it is very painful when they have to keep trying like that...your boy sounds like a TROOPER! Is his line going to be the pedriatric width? this made all the difference for me. I was not a child, but have small veins.
Good luck to you both! Take care! Trails
