I've been taking 300 mgs of Neurotin at bedtime with a xanax for a few years and it works fairly well.
I've just been told to increase it and get the pain and sleep under control. I'm all for that.
The first time I took it, years ago, I raised it very slowly from 100mgs.
I'm already taking 300 at night and found some 100s lying around and added them for a day or 2, then 2 days of 300 in the am and 100 in the afternoon and 300 at bedtime.
Didn't feel any different, so, today took 300 in the am and 300(I'm out of 100s) in the late afternoon today and got completely blasted.
The last time I did this I wasn't starting out with vicious vertigo, either.
I'm wired and my head feels like it's rolling off my shoulders. Hard to focus on anything and all my nerve endings are buzzing. (I know it's early but shouldn't it be deadening that stuff?) Although my muscles feel looser(sp?)
I'm due to take another one. Um... I think I'm afraid to. I wonder if I can sleep on it at this level.
Sorry for the babbling just be happy you're not on the phone with me.
I'm not sure if I had a question and am sure I'm making no sense.
Phew, I'm exhausted from running in hyper-drive, any suggestions? (kind of freaking out here maybe I should take that xanax)

Hey little Bluebird,
I'm not too sure I would add anything else into the mix tonight.
I'm thinking water to help wash it out.??
If things get too weird, I would call a pharmacist, or if very weird, a doc.
Thinking of you... M

Thanks Melanie,
I did take the xanax since I'm so hyper. I'll call someone if it gets any stranger.
It's wearing off, I think/hope. Maybe I'll make a phone call in the morning anyway.

Well, the xanax mellowed me and was able to sleep fitfully for 2 hours. Now, what?
The 6pm dose of Neurontin wore off and am not hyper any more or dizzy or sleeping. *sigh*
I can't believe I got a reciprocal reaction to this. I haven't in the past. Could too high a dose too fast do that?
Don't know what to do; I need to sleep.

What is the MOST BORING book or paperwork do you have to read? That helps me plus reading/posting here causes me to get sleepy fast. So that's why I'm on here around midnight give or take & when I get up in am...lack of sleep!

it's probably the xanax not the neurontin, but we all respond differently to different doses etc..
I used to take 900mg 3x a day for (trigeminal/migraine/ocular) pain, it killed some pain but it made me gain 15 pounds of water weight, and my insurance didn't cover it.
I took even more, at one point I was at 3600mg a day. It cost a lot of money at the time and I didn't get enough relief compaired to side effects and cost so I stopped. Gabapentin is the generic name. FWIW
..this was two years ago though.

Thank you, Betty and 2tired,
I did puzzles until I was tired enough to go back to sleep and got another broken 3 hours. Sure am hung over now.
The odd thing is with only the 300mgs at bedtime with a xanax, I'm fine; adding extra put me way over the top.
I'll call the pharmacist today and see how he recommends I raise it.
My experience in the past with neurontin has been similar to yours 2tired, it didn't work well enough to make it worth the side effects. I also gained 10 pounds in 3 months.
I am willing to give it a try again if I can do it in a way that doesn't make me bounce off walls.
The most I could ever take was 1200mg/day and that was pretty zombie-like.
Actually, xanax is one of the few things I can take that calms me, relaxes muscles and reduces pain enough to stay still enough to sleep. I don't know why that is or if it's like that for anybody else.

Thanks Cave, I know... I took it about 3 years ago for a year. I didn't like the side effects but got used to it.
I was able to fall back to sleep during the night which I couldn't otherwise, so, for me it increased the amount of sleep if not the quality.
Didn't do much for the nerve pain, though.
I was pretty surprised to get hyper on it. I hadn't in the past.
I do get that reaction to most pain meds, antihistamines, decongestants, zantac, tricyclics... the list goes on.
Thank you I'll go much slower and see what happens (after I call the pharmacy).
edit: my pharmacist said... "do what Cave says".
He said it was too big a dose for me and to go very slowly even though the med is safe up to 3600mgs. We both thought an increase of 200mgs shouldn't have been, but there it is. I'll dump half the capsules and raise it slower and over more days.

Back in the 'feet on fire' days I took 300mg at bedtime.
I never tried more or taking it during waking hours.
it worked just fine (with one ultram) but ultram has sulfa in it so I am told, can't find the reference just now.
The other member of the household experienced something approaching DTs on the slightest bit of neurontin. If there ever was a med with individually different effects that one is.

As have I, many times, in the past.
The last time around with the Neurontin I took 100mgs to start and added very slowly. I "thought" (that was the problem right there) since I take 300 at night, anyway, I could handle more.
It was alright for a few days and then POW.
I'll go back to my usual sleep thing for a few days and just add around 100 in the daytime and see if I can work it up at all. If not I'll call and get something else prescribed at a bizarrely low dose.

Thanks Charlie, This was extremely weird and I can see where the DT thing wouldn't be so much of a stretch.
Aside from being totally wired, all my muscles ached, couldn't sit still and all my nerve endings were standing on... um... end. Today had sticking things all over my body to add to the hot face feeling from last night added to the overall inflammation of the past few days.
I was able to get a nap today and that helped slightly. Boy, I so don't want to do that again.
I re-read the PDR information and a lot of what I experienced didn't appear on there at all. I don't know why the severe reaction to the second dose yesterday as compared to the morning dose. Maybe I took them too close together.
Hah, and don't get me started on Ultram, lol. I took it once and it didn't touch the pain but made me high as a kite. I don't know anyone else it did that to.
