Hi everyone. It's been a while for me as I've been preoccupied with my treatment.....
My Dr. just put me on IV Push Rocephin via a midline. Since receiving the midline I have had blood in my line consistently.
THe Home Healthcare team has been here daily and I have to flush it a few extra times a day with Heparin.Apparently it's not supposed to be this difficult.
I am being told to contact my PCP to see if they can order a PICC line so that I can have it put in at a local hospital and not have to travel back to my LLMD's office/hospital.
My questions... 1. Those who have had IV Abx- did you have success with the midline?
2. Did you have burning in the shoulder area while pushing the Rocephin? Did the burning dissipate with continued use of Rocephin?(I am only on day 4)
3. My instructions say to push 20cc over 5-10 minutes... should I be drawing that out to 20-30 minutes even though it's not an infusion it's a push?
4. Are the horrid headaches and neck aches side effects of the Rocephin OR side effects of the LYme?
5. Is there anything else I should be taking as supplemtation (aside from probiotics) like CoQ10 etc?
Thanks in advance for all info as I feel like a fish out of water. I have neuro lyme which presented like ALS... I'm just trying to nip it all in the bud.

HI, I have a hickman cath. central line... its been in for 10 months...
I occasionally notice small little amounts of blood in the line, but not much at all.
I have never had a problem, there should not be pain or burning when you push the meds, they should flow easlily.... (10ml)saline, (2grams)rocephin, (10ml)saline, then (5ml)heprin.
I push my 20 ml over 10 minutes, 1 ml every 30 seconds....are you sure the pain and excess blood are not from the recent surgery? I thought haveing the central line placed was very painful, I took a week off work because that area of the shoulder was so sore and painful, and the site where the line came out did bleed for several days.
I am sorry Im not more help that was jst my expierience...headaches could definatley be from rocephin....I would never know I always have them
If it doesnt feel right it probably isnt so I would definatlely check with your doctor or surgeon who placed the line....Jill

I had the midline too for 5 weeks. Had to stop the Rocephen due to developing gallstones. (disolved on their own after stopping.)
I did get aliittle blood in the line, usully when I didn't cap it while the line was under pressure. (leaving alittle fluid in the syringe)
My shoulder & arm were sore the first week but I attributed that to me being so tense when the line was inserted...I'm such a wimp.
If I pushed the fluids too fast I'd get more soreness. I had to do the Rocephin over 20 minutes to 1/2 hour. The whole procedure took me 35-40mins.
I don't know if the headache is a herx...I never got any.
Do check with your doctor regarding the burn & headache.

Hi!
It burns my arm too if I push it in too fast. I usually end up slowing it down way more than the directions tell me too, and it stops the burning. Sometimes I can speed it up a little later.

Thanks so much for the responses. I appreciate everyone taking the time to read my concerns and for offering their thoughts. I will find out tomorrow if I am to have a PICC or not.

See if you can do a hep lock, and have it changed 2x a week, and not have to do a central line. or, see if you can do Rocephin injections instead of IV.

I had a PICC so I don't know if I can accurately answer your questions, but I can tell you from my own experience.
I was told, and did not experience, any burning, or feeling of any kind, when I did the IV infusions. I don't think it's good if you feel burning.
I took Actigall while infusing rocephin, to protect my gall bladder.
With a PICC, I also did saline flushes before and after the rocephin infusions. Plus heparin. I also infused IV glutathione for detoxing, on the days off (I did 5 days rocephin on, 2 days off).
I had gastro issues when my infusions were only 5 minutes, which is what the pharmacy/supply co. told me to do. I was fine when I extended the infusions to 30 minutes. They gave me a pump so I didn't have to manually do the infusions.
The rocephin also gave me a much bigger yeast problem than orals, so be careful.
Hopefully your aches and pains are herxes.
Take care, P

When I got a PICC put in, the burning stopped. I was told it was because it was in a larger vein (artery? I should know this by now...) I could do it much faster then.
I hope that helps.
