I'm still waiting for my results from Igenex regarding Lyme. My next LLMD visit is April 4th.

I had my annual pap smear in January. It came back with some minor abnormalities. I had to have a colposcopy today and my doctor found two abnormal spots on my cervix. She sent them to the lab for testing. I'll have to wait 2 weeks for the results.

An abnormal pap could be caused by an infection, precancerous growth, or cancer.

Since Lyme is an infection, I'm wondering if this is the culprit. Any other ladies have similar problems. Just curious. Thanks.

I had my first abnormal pap after contracting Lyme. The biopsy came back fine and the next pap was fine, too. Wishing you the best! Hiker

I too had an irregular pap early lyme. Discovered I was folic acid deficient. Treated with 1 gr. folic acid orally for several months and re-tested normal.

I continue to take 800-1200 mg daily because of absorbtion issues.

I had a couple of abnormal paps and I am sure they were lyme related.

It could be that the Lyme impacted your immune system such that the HPV became more of an issue or became more active. I am not aware, however, of Lyme causing a pap to be abnormal, when there was no HPV. Does that happen?

It is such a common virus, that any weakening of the immune system may cause it to become more active.

Cinder,
Like others, I also had an irregular pap (it happened twice) but the biopsies were both negative.

i had repeated abnormal paps for approx 3 years which the obgyn couldn't sort out. in retrospect, we now realize it was after contracting lyme (probably via sexual transmission, male to female). after about a year of being on oral abx they normalized. i stayed on abx for 2 years, and even now that i have been off abx for about a year the paps are still normal. so far, anyway...

a llmd in new jersey once told me he had seen a lot of abnormal paps in female sexual partners of male lyme patients, particularly men with very active infections. after that, my partner had his semen tested via PCR at Igenex and it came up positive for lyme.

but whether i had HPV showing up during periods of depressed immunity or an actual cervical lyme infection, who knows.

pre-lyme, i used folic acid to deal with abnormal paps which were proven to be HPV flares. it works for lots of people, and some say it reduces the risk of cervical cancer which is potentially increased with HPV, etc...

best,
flossie

thought of something else.... if the occasion for another biopsy presents itself (oh joy) you might want to get your doc to pull a little tissue for Igenex. if you call them, they'll tell you exactly what they need (size, shipped on ice or not, etc), and they can run PCRs etc. we did this when my partner had a liver biopsy. it would be quite an interesting thing if you could prove active cervical infection! also, the folic acid supplimentation is probably discussed elsewhere quite extensively online. it's my impression that it's something you can do with often very good results --even if you are not folic acid deficient.

I also had two abnormal paps since contracting Lyme. I also wondered if it was related. My biopsies were normal too, thank God.

Try not to stress too much about the biopsies. They will hopefully be normal.

Lyme has been known to cause MAJOR havoc in womens reproductive organs. BUT it has not yet been linked to cancer in those areas that I am aware of.

For how lyme and female issies may be related try this website:

www.pelvicpain.com
and go to "dr C's endo and pelvic pain info center" on that site there is some research linking some of these things together. He worked with Igenex for some of this research.

please let us know,
Trails
