Ok, I thought that might get someone's attention - I have this strange problem. Wondering if anyone else does?

At night I have a problem with night sweats, and sometimes - it seems like maybe a few days a month, I wake up in the morning and I smell like tom cat pee! [Eek!] [dizzy]

What does this mean? Other than I've now totally humiliated myself in divulging this information. I've wanted to ask this before - but never did.

Signed,
Stinky Cat [Razz]

Glad I don't live nearby!! [Eek!] Seriously, maybe you need to do a colon cleanse or something. Sounds toxic.

Drinking lots of water??

Oh dear, we might need Trails's help to answer this one. There has been recent discussion about pee on here, esp. the bath. [lol]

Anyway, can you describe this a little bit more? Is it ammonia like smell? Some people do describe this type of odor, and in some cases can see toxins coming out of their bodies when their normally white sheets turn brown stained from toxins. The night sweats sound like babesia. Just curious, what color is your urine? Very dark urine can indicate Babesia as well.
Don't feel bad, we might give you a few laughs too! [group hug]

Singing........"smelly cat, smelly cat..."

Oh sorry...... had a flashback to Phoebe on Friends.... [lol]

Sure sounds like lots of toxins?

My hubby had a strange problem also. Very very OILY hair and skin. He washes his hair daily, but it's greasy by noon.

Asked the LLMD at last visit, and he said since Lyme was a skin disease, it was possibly caused by the bacterial die off.

my stool took on a slight tom cat odor when doing wobenzyme-N. the more tablets i took, the more distinct it became, best i recall.

some of the technical literature sent to me by the company whose site is http://www.mucos.de ,mentioned that either and/or both wobenzym, and other of their enzyme products will give one's stool the slight smell of "tom cat". however, i don't recall any such reference to urine taking on a "tom cat" odor.

However, the same lit. i read was also reassuring, giving me a satifactory techical explanation for its occurance in the stool. i read this back in 1999, and the literature is buried deep somewhere in one of my storage containers.

i think this odor occurring in the stool is probably indicative of a fresh product, and not the alley cat's "product" [lol]

the reason:
i recently did a course of wobenzym, the color of which whose tablets were the same color as the ones i did back in 1999; their color appeared to be a diluted green color, with a hint of beige in the green, depending on lighting conditions.

between then and now, i did several bottles of wobenzym tablets that were colored red, so i figured this is a new color, and thusly "fresh."

therefore, if the company hasn't been making these diluted-green-beige tablets for years, and i bought this bottle of "apparently" old wobenzym, AND my stool did not take on this slight tom cat odor, i would tentatively conclude that the batch i recently took was too old, and therefore degraded, to who knows what extent.

on the other hand, my sense of smell has been dead lately, so if the tom cat odor was there, i didn't smell it.
additionally, in my most recent wob. course, i took at most,3 and 4 tablets per serving 2-3 times in a 24h. period, which i don't think is enough to make the odor noticeable. i think it becomes distinctly noticeable starting at approx. 5-6 or more tablets taken as a singular dose, and doing this many tablets 3 + times per 24h. period.

btw, i washed off the red dye before taking the tablets.

if this is the case with their enzyme products, it probably is with other enzyme products by other makers of them.

in the case of the slight tom cat stool with the wobenzym, i'd take it to mean a fresh product, and not some alley cat's "product." [lol]

while this was effect for me,i don't recall my urine taking on this odor as a result of the wobenzyme when i took a lot of it back in 1999.

Thanks to all of you who were brave enough to respond to this stinky post. [Big Grin]

Wildcondor, yes, when I get up in the morning after the night sweats, I smell like ammonia! (hence the "tom cat"). Thank the Lord after I take a shower, I don't smell like I've spent the night in a litter box! [Eek!]

I have night sweats pretty often - but it doesn't always smell like that. It seems like a cyclical(sp?) thing.

My urine is not really dark though - I drink a lot of water. But now that you mention that - my son's is very dark...hmmmm. (both of my children have lyme too)

Sure does sound like you are sweating out toxins!!

I think that good. Your body is doing its job. Just my opinion I'm not a Dr.

I have smelly pee w/ flagyl and all the stuff I'm taking. It's embarrassing. Especially at work.

I don't want any one to go to the bathroom after me for fear the will smell it.

I have to spray airfreshner after.

Anyway what rx and vitamins are you on?

I just had an appointment with my LLMD where I told her that my sweat smells like salami. She smiled and said that is descriptive [Wink]

I have heard others with Babesia claim there sweat is extremely strong...but who really knows if this is babesia.

If you haven't been tested I would go ahead and have the FISH test from IgeneX especially since you are experiencing the night sweats.

The one thing that I started to do before the salami sweats was exercising for the first time in two years so I suspect mine is detox.

Take care - and I am still smiling about the Tom Cat Pee...;0)

This is an interesting one!!!

What is sweat supposed to smell of normally???

Everyone has their individual 'scent', going through some of the different descriptions that I've heard ( particularly from men talking about their own aroma!)are; fried onions, curry AND the tom cat pee one. Fresh sweat always smells different to stale because of the bacteria forming in it.
What a fascinating thread! MMM

I had to put a clothespin on my nose just to read this.....

But seriously, check and see if anybody else can smell it. Sometimes lyme/babs can make your smeller go out of whack for awhile and things that smell perfectly normal to others can make you practically sick.

Somebody a few years back(Appleseed I think) posted that he smelled like a cat box, but nobody else in the house could detect it.

At one point I thought frying shrimp, which is actually a good smell, had an odor like somebody trapped a skunk in an outhouse and tried to give it a home permanent.

It may be just you, and if so it will pass.

Charlie

I had horrible body odor when I was first dx and treated for Lyme.

Nobody around me seemed to notice it, though, but for me, it was awful.

The yucky odor disappeared completely after about a month of Ceftin.

Hope you're able to find some relief!

Conventional thinking is that sweat does not smell, it only starts to smell if there is cutaneous bacteria growing.

This is conveintional thought..... however, there are a number of rather old accounts of peculiar sweat smell as a result of brucellosis infection. Brucellosis is rather nasty and can cause a lot of lyme like symtoms. It requires a mutli antibiotic regime and a long treatment period to bring it under control/try to eliminate. A 12 month antibiotics treatment course is recgonized by experts treating this disease.

The smell described by the early accounts (mainly from europe where this was a major problem in rural areas)

Asside from brucellosis I am pretty sure that there are other pathogens that can cause odd sweat smells. I however do not know what they are.

I myself have noticed the same smelly sweat effect and have been trying to figure it out for some time. It periodically occurs, mainly around the symtom flareups which leads me to believe that it is bacterial based.

The periods around flareups seem to be marked by a greater suseptability to oppertunistic infections that are normally held in check. This some have postulated is due to the spirocette shedding large numbers of blebs which are thought to overload the antibody defenses there by resulting in a observably compromised immune system during this time. This is however only conjecture.

As a result, it may be that what ever causes the smell is allowed to colonize the skin or epi-cutaneous layers OR is may be that it is the blebs or other fragments of the lysed spirocettes that actually have some type of odour.

I would suspect the first explanation over the second as the free floating bacteria density after treatment with antibiotics is pretty low.

Also of interest, the sweat odour does NOT correlate with breath odour. This is important as there a number of well known reasons for odd breath odours (acetone smell, fruity smell etc.)

As a final note the odor does go away by its self after a few days, even if the severe night (and day) sweats still occur. This is particularly odd.

I forgot to mention, brucellosis is also known for producing sweat that will stain clothing. Why? I don't know. While this can happen with a number of ather things (particulalry with some medications including some antibiotics) it is none the less interesting.

Brucella is in many ways similar to bartonella. It is also a intra cellular bacteria that can infect any part of the body. It can be passed doen from one generation to the next via the gestational route.

There is a lot of evidence to support the probability of "chronic" brucellosis but it still remains "contraversial" as does the method of how to treat it. It does not get much press because it does not occur that much (some think due to under reporting and poor diagnostic testing).

Thats all I know about it.

I have smiled more today from this post then I have in a long time...guess I better get out a bit more, huh [Wink]

David's statement at the end of his very intelligent post, "That is all I know about it" made me literally chuckle out loud and also think that with the amount of highly intelligent people on this board we should be able to come up with a cure for this disease.

I think it is time to organize a lymenet "think-tank". My mind goes round and round in regards to treatment possibilities and unconventional treatments that might just work. Wished we could all just get together over seltzer water and gluten free crackers and get down to business.

I am sure we could have this tick borne thing figured out in no time. [Wink]

Very interesting about the Brucella - I was tested by John's Hopkins for this but it was negative but so were my results for lyme, ehrlichia and babesia which I was highly positive for through IgeneX. hmmm?!?

I love soft cheeses though and my Mom had goats, sheep, donkeys, and llamas so lord knows what I could have.

Will keep you all posted on the salami sweat...

What you eat can affect the aroma of your sweat.

Do you get "salami sweat" when you eat garlic?

I know that whenever I eat lamb, my perspiration smells like lamb.

When people eat the fermented Vietnamese fish sauce, or Nuoc mam, which they use like we use catsup, they'll smell fishy.

I've read that some people from other cultures have commented that people who eat beef have a certain aroma.

ArtnSoul, I'm so glad you brought up this topic. I was thinking not to long ago how to put it into words and ask this question myself. It's like a salami odor that that comes mostly from my head/hair area (I take a shower in the morning & night)It's a sickly smell. I'm just relieved to hear that others have a similar experience. Hey

Smelly urine can sometimes be a sign of a UTI.

And can also mean you have a concentrated urine. Are you drinking alot of water?

But I have noticed the same thing lately.
I have up my garlic to 1-2 3XD.
It makes my urine stink.
Not like garlic.
Just smell really bad.

Make sure to talk over everything First with your LLMD

Take care [Smile]

Considering that the skin is a big breathing organ, anything we ingest can come out our pores. Have you ever stood next to someone who ate curry? Garlic? There should be some kind of light that can illuminate the cloud of odor around them.

One night I was doing my normal talk on the skin and stating that what you apply on the skin can be detected in every organ of the body within 26 seconds. A woman in the group nearly choked...when she had a bad cold, her husband chopped up 50 garlic cloves, put them in bags and placed them around her feet. She said she smelled like garlic for three weeks. She later found out that you are only supposed to rub your foot with ONE clove of garlic! Not sure that even works; I guess she was desperate.

I think toxins, medications, anything our body can't use is sent out through the skin. The skin also works in conjunction with our liver; so I'm guessing if the liver is overloaded, it will take another route to detox. I think that was already mentioned here. So, I think a good detox tea to cleanse the liver, and a hot bath would help.

And, yes, even though I didn't smell my daughter, she said it was strong to her.

This is a fun thread...

This post sure has gotten a lot of people's attention!

I'm just so glad that after I get a shower, it seems to get rid of my "tom cat" smell! If I still smelled like that after a shower - I don't know what I'd do.

I'm glad this post has put a few smiles on some faces [bonk]

Oh, and there seems to be some confusion - I stated that my SWEAT smelled like tom cat pee in the morning after night sweats, not my urine. [Razz]

A few of you have asked what Rx I'm on - right now my LLMD is trying me on the Diflucan Protocol.

Oh, and I don't know if I'd be brave enough to ask someone else to deliberately smell me when I can hardly stand it myself! [dizzy]

Hi Art,

I would get your kidneys fully checked out to be on the safe side. If ammonia or other toxins are staying in your bloodstream too long because the kidneys aren't getting rid of them fast enough, it can cause that smell.

Have you asked your doctor about the ammonia odor? Apparently it *can* be a sign of a liver or kidney problem.
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/sweating-and-body-odor/DS00305/DSECTION=4

The fact that you only have it a few days a month is a good sign but it wouldn't hurt to have your doctor look into it.

Probably anything that increases ammonia in your body could cause your sweat to smell like ammonia. h. pylori, mycoplasma some parasites and a high protien intake supposedly increase ammonia. It's possible that some other lyme co-infections increase ammonia as well.

I don't sweat like normal people so I don't have the ammonia smell in my sweat but I used to have it in my urine occasionally. I haven't had it since I was treated for h. pylori. I have no idea if it has disappeared because the h. pylori was treated but it seems possible.

Here is an interesting article on ammonia that mentions liver and h. pylori.
