Hi ALl,
I was given a script of 3000 mg of Amoxicillin daily. When I started taking them I noticed a lot of gases in my stomach and rumbling. I have since stopped but I am stuck with gas, and knots in the mid esophagus. I went to a gastro dr. and he prescribed Nexium 40mg once a day. I am on this now for a week and feeling better but not much. Do you think this was caused by Amocicillin? I know doxy and hurt your stomach but I never expected this. I also never ever had any stomach problems. I really need to gt on some type of abx since this is about the 3rd time I have relapsed with lyme. I feel I will never get better. From the time I got bit in 1994 till now it has been one roller coaster. THe only abx that made me feel good was IV rocephin but I do not want to go that route again. Maybe the IM injections will be good. I wil ask my llmd but he so highly recommended this high dose of amoxicillin and said it was the new protocol. ANy suggestions???

I am on 3000mg of Amoxy daily as well. It helps to take it with food, if you aren't.

It's very possible the Amoxy is killing bacteria in your digestive system. It might be a good thing. If it's bad bacteria, then you will feel better after a while.

If you've been on it for a while, it could also be killing good bacteria and you may have yeast issues.

I didn't realize Amoxy alone was used. My LLMD uses it with other abx. At the moment, I'm just on Amoxy, but that's because my body needed a break.

I am on amoxy 3,000mg plus probenecid which keeps the amoxy in the blood longer/higher.

I have only noticed mild tummy stuff. But at times it can get sorta bad...but not last for long.

Are you taking a good probiotic? That was the key for me: yogurt daily AND this stuff called Theralac. Love it---nothing is better. Totally helped my gas and bloating.

www.theralac.com

Somtimes it gets outa whack though and it is VERY hard to get the balance corrected though--with your gut flora.

I was MIS diagnosed as having GERD when I first started amoxy coz I het these ROCK in the tummy feelings...alittle below my rib cage...alittle above the beely button---it HURTS especially when touched. BUt it isnt gerd...I tried the meds for it they didnt touch it....it would come and go without any relation to food or lying down.

That's my experience--hope it doesnt muddy the water though!

Mispy:

I myself have taken as high a dose as 5,500mg daily of Amoxy. When stomach problems developed, my MD recommended Aloe Vera Juice, 2 oz 3 x daily in OJ or something other, until pain is gone, then twice daily (am and pm)while on the meds. It works!!!

Also, I second the motion to get on Theralac. It is great stuff!!!

I think you may be better off with the IM Bicillin shots. that way you don;t have to swallow the pills, and it won't bother your stomach. You will have to learn how to give yourself the shots, but its not a big deal once you get the hang of it.
You can take the Bicillin shots, and then add in a macrolide like Ketek, Biaxin or zithromax orally, plys flagyl in time. 3,000 mg Amoxicillin is the usual starting dose, many times its necessary to go up to 6,000 then to 16,000 mg.
Have you been tested for co-infections?
