Hi everyone, I was doing some reading on the internet tonight. Over the last 3 years I've had problems swallowing food. I had a scope done last July which found a HH, GERD, Gastritis,Esophagitis,& duodenitis, all inflammatory conditions cept ofcourse the HH.
My swallowing has been so bad all my food has to be mushed up like baby food. 2 weeks ago I started my female cycle and got very sick with it this month.
My swallowing also got worse at that time which I didn't think was possible and as of today it's to the point I"m scared to eat any solids because it feels like I"m choking to death.
Tonight I went on the web and learned about achlasia(difficulty swallowing). While my GI problems can contribute to this condition it is also caused by heredity as well as INFLAMMITORY CONDITIONS. Yesterday my left knee joint as well as my right jaw joint are swollen and very painful and the swallowing has gotten worse over the last 2 weeks.. So it seems all tied into one.
my GI doc really couldn't figure out last July why I was having the amount of trouble swallowing that I was, I see him now tomorrow to tell him it's gotten worse. After reading about this Achalasia I am CONVINCED this is what it wrong with me and it's brought on by the chronic lyme disease.
Just seems way too odd that my left knee joint is swollen and painful as is my right jaw joint and these 2 hit after about a week of my swallowing being worse.
The drugs used for Achalsia are all different but the goal is to get the smooth muscles in the esophagus and les muscle to relax in order to pass food through properly. This is a normal body function everyone has except people with achalasia. Our muscles don't relax as what is needed for proper swallowing..
The drugs they are currently using is heart meds which makes no sense to me but what the hey I'm no MD. I have been experimenting on myself the last few days with Ativan. I take a small piece in the afternoon, sleep for a bit and when I get up, low an behold I can swallow some food. Granted it still has to be mushed up but IT GOES DOWN. and that is whats most important right now considering I'm 90 pds and facing malnutrition at this point.
I posted this because I know there are a few people here who are also dealing with swallowing trouble as well and I thought maybe it would be help to them.. I hope so . Robyn

I'm sorry your swallowing has become so difficult. I also have considerable trouble with my throat feeling like it is swollen which has caused me problems with swallowing but nothing as bad as yours sounds. It is listed as a symtpom of lyme in the ILADS site.
My doctor (not LLMD) thinks it is related to sicca or sjogrens syndrome.
Thanks for posting your research. I'll read about it. I hope you get the problem fixed soon. I know how much my problem bothers me so I can only imagine how awful it must be for you.
BTW - I'm trying rife and I do find that my throat feels like it is swelling more during some of my sessions. I think mine is probably related to lyme and I'm having some sort of worsening of symptoms temporarily while killing whatever is causing the problem. I am hopeful that the throat will get better otherwise I'll have to go on medication for it. My doctor wants me to take saligen or one of the other medications used for sjogrens. Terry
