Any thoughts on whether probiotics can work if you take an extended release abx? Would think it would be hard to colonize the gut?

Also, why is it that the acidophils is yogurt isn't killed in the stomach but the pill type does??

Too much time on my hands to think about these weird things.

Thanks!

HumanBeing,

That's a good question . . .

I'm also on Biaxin (1000 mg) slow released once a day. I hate to think that I'm spending lots of money on good probiotics only to have them killed by the Biaxin in my system immediately. I'll ask my Doctor. He said to take the probiotics at least 2 hours away from the Biaxin.

Does Plaquenil kill the good gut bacteria also?

It turns out that I also have lyme, not just my teen age son. My band 30 was elevated (and one more). He said that band 30 is indicative of lyme, especially with symptoms. I have had a very poor memory, ringing in my ears 24/7, difficulty hearing, floaters, deteriorating vision for 4 years now. I also have these strange fatty pads on the outsides of both ankles. My Doctor said that he has treated a few women for lyme who also had the fat pads, and the pads slowly disappear with treatment.

We both just started taking 400 mg. a day of Plaquenil and 1000 mg. a day of Biaxin. In addition to the Probiotics we are supplementing with Milk Thistle, Borage Oil, Uda Oil and Magnesium/Calcium.

My other son (14 yrs) has had strep throat, swollen glands and mycoplasma pneumonia on and off (mostly on) since January. Our LLMD sent his blood to Igenix yesterday to check for Lyme. He just started his third round of antibiotics. The first two rounds were for 10 days each, and didn't kick the infections. Hopefully this 3 week round will do the trick.

My husband has symptoms of lyme also . . . he's seeing this same Doctor, and he'll have blood sent to Igenix on Wednesday.

I hope we don't ALL have it. If so, the expense will be incredible. Well, I guess we can't complain too much. We generally never spend money on doctors and medicine.

Who said it isn't???

Several years ago someone here brought this up to me about the antibiotics always being in our blood stream [esp any extended release, I guess] and it really doesn't matter if we take the acidophilus two hrs before or after the abx.

That threw me for a loop!!! [Eek!] I guess we just shouldn't worry about such things. All I know is that it would be much worse if we completely stopped taking the probiotics.

I have been taking the Biaxin XL 500mgs twice a day now for about a year. I take the probiotics six hours away from the Biaxin XL. Haven't had any stomach problems and I feel great.
