Could Nystatin possibly cause elevated liver levels?
My ALT & AST levels came back high (39 & 60). ABX Stopped and retested two weeks later. Results even higher (86 & 162).
I had a funny taste in my mouth and slight nausea around the time of the first test. ABX stopped and funny taste seemed to let up a bit; but then come back pretty strong again. I stopped Nystatin to see if it made a difference. It did. Funny taste went away. Started up Nystatin and funny taste started to return, so I stopped Nystatin again.
Tested for Hepatitis, This came back fine. Next test of ALT and AST came back lower, but still abnormally high (57 & 113).
Anyone have any experience with Nystatin causing problems? I started taking something called Ortho DTX last week. It has Milk thistle in it. Increased my deeper greens and B Complex.
This is all very scary. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, best you can do is use the Milk Thistle, In other countries is even part of daily routine to take.
You do have to pulse it after period of time if on high dose. Let say off for couple weeks.
Hopefully after your tests are better.
You can take in tea form also. From health food stores.
Also heard Sam-E, Expensive but in tests know to reverse even severe liver conditions to normal.
Statin meds scare me can cause liver problems very hard on liver. I fought my doc. 3 yrs. till my cholesterol went so high. I finally gave in.
BTW/ read for people with high cholesterol, which many lymies have to put up with when not getting proper treatment. Read peelings from limes,lemon,oranges, lower it.
May take little while but quite common we eventually get high liver enzymes.
Do not worry keep up your regiment on Milk Thistle, many have lowered with it
I have been taking for yrs., all the Tylenol, now statin & high niacin all liver elevators.
So far with taking the Milk Thistle, almost afraid to say, normal. I am ready after all these yrs. on getting bad results sooner or later.
Will up Milk Thistle then.

I find this thread to be interesting. When I was dx'd with type2 diabetes last september [05] my triglycerides were off the chart [2300] my liver enzymes were on the high side and I showed positive for hepatitis B exposure.
I had bloodwork/urine again a few weeks ago. triglycerides down to 430 liver enzymes normal range still showing pos exposure to hep B
I'd be interested in any links you might like to share re: hepatitis and liver problems attributed to LD. thanks Sharon >^..^<

HI, I would think almost any medication could increase liver enzymes and cause gall bladder problems...
BUT, my gall bladder caused problems BEFORE my lyme dx and antibiotics (in fact, I think it was caused by "Slim Fast", which I was using to lose weight).
And, recently I had gall bladder/liver/rib pain with a slight increase in liver enzymes, and have NOT been on antibiotics for a few months, plus, the gall bladder was removed several years ago.
So, my guess is: lyme bacteria are still present in my liver....

I am not saying this is what is causing your problem...
Before I was diagnosed with lyme (but I had had lyme for over 10 yrs by this point)
I had elevated liver enzymes.
tested me for hep abc - all neg
ultrasound of liver and what not - looked great.
The dr. just had a puzzled look and started looking in a book .
He finally said he didnt know. Just check them again later.
Now I think this increase of liver enzymes was due to the lyme itself.
