What have you all been doing with the headaches that sometime come as side effect of minocycline?

My son just started and has steadily been complaining of progressive headaches....He has been on the mino for 5 days...

They dont seem awful yet and was wondering how bad and how long they have lasted with those who have experienced this....Thanks Eileen

Are you sure this is a side effect and not lyme-killing action?

Minocin made me dizzy when I started it for the first time. This is a listed side effect, and does not now occur when I take it. It never gave me a headache. The real headache generator for me was tinidazole, and I am sure that was lyme killing.

Hope your son gets some relief soon.

Hi Lou:

Yes it could very well be lyme die off...As you know I have to guess at everything with my son (autism)..He is also complaining of teeth today...These two were biggies when we first suspected lyme and were helped by Doxy but the HERX from doxy was pure torture for him and us...

Right now it seems like it must be a continual maybe dull head pain as he complains from morning til bedtime...Before lyme dx he was SCREAMING in pain...

He does not appear to be dizzy but making strange eye movements (widening his eyes NOT seizure type of movements)

Tinadazole is the next to be added after we see how he does on the Mino....I am really nervous about this one...

Mepron/Zith was the absolute worst...Herxing from Hell....Pure Rages...even started biting which he never did..

Thanks Lou, Eileen

You probably already know this, but most people who go on flagyl or tinidazole find it necessary to ramp up. Too terrible otherwise.

I started on tini with just a tiny amount, because the first pill gave me a three day headache! So, after that, I ramped up slowly to the full dose. If your son already bothered by headaches, might want to consider the ramp.

My first time experience with tini I attribute to having a bunch of cysts built up in my system from previous abx treatment. Some abx supposedly more likely to generate cysts than others. Not sure about this, but with some abx combos, tini does nothing.

What dosage of mino is your son taking?

I took 200mg for a long time, then found out when my daughter was nauseous and dizzy with that same dose that 200mg of mino is a lot.

Can be decieving as some abx rx are for 500-1000mg. So you could be giving him a strong dose that could possibly be reduced.

Just an idea.

Hi Char: Thanks for that info...Yes my son was started on 100mg 2xday....Spent most of yesterday complaining, crying and then laughing...I think it is hitting the buggers....

He is taking questran also....started this over a month ago with no abx to see if it would help/hurt....He has had NO aggression since starting questran..and he is also using words he has not used before and attempting longer sentences...so it appears to be helping him alot..

he is the typing that cannot eliminate toxins well....so the HOPE is that it will help during abx therapy for this God Awful Disease...

I am thrilled to hear of the progress your son has made with the decrease in agression and improvement with language! I imagine the 2 go hand and hand as so much agression is rooted in difficulty with communication.

Wish it were easier going, but prayers going up that he will continue to make headway getting rid of this disease.

Hi Eileen,

I'm so glad to hear the Questran seems to be continuing to help!

As far as the headaches, I have gotten some help from Alka Seltzer Gold when it is a herxing issue. It doesn't have any aspirin in it. You take it on an empty stomach, and the bicarb helps reduce the excess acidity in the blood, which can cause headaches and other discomfort from herxing.

If I take too much, it suppresses the acidity in my stomach, and I have trouble eating, so watch for that. I only use one tablet at a time, in 8-12 oz. of water, sipped slowly. Usually one of those is enough for a day, for me.

My environmental doc has me use it when I have exposures to chemicals, molds, anything that tends to throw me off. It does seem to help. Go easy, since your son can't give much feedback, but it is fairly benign.
