I know there has been discussion about this on the board but I couldn't find specific info to my question...I *think* I become more symptomatic right after my period when my estrogen and progesterone levels are at their lowest. I'm not positive of this because I also tend to push myself and maybe the increase in symptoms is simply a result of that. Can anyone tell me thier expereince with this phenomenon? Also, I'm not sure how coincidental this is but about 3 months prior to me first becoming symptomatic with Lyme I went off birth control pills that I'd been on for 10 plus years. I wonder if the pill could have helped mask or minimize some symptoms I may have otherwise had earlier? Anyone have any thoughts on this.

The BEST thing you could've done was get off the synthetic estrogen. It is very helpful to get a good bio-identical hormone cream. I know of a good one.
My recommendation is to go to the expert...www.johnleemd.com, or .org. Or try to get ahold of the book "What Your Doctor Has Not Told You About PreMenopause" (or Menopause, or Breast Cancer)

Hi Nicolette, Yes, we've had this topic before and Azurewish has kindly put it to the top again so you should be able to see it.
I am sure that the pill masks a lot of Lyme symptoms.
This has been a big bug bear of mine; I know that my hormones play a huge part in my Lyme symptoms but I still haven't figured out how.
I think that my hormones (since coming off the pill) fluctuate wildly, from ziltch to too much. I am sure that my body has gone into a state of hyper-ovulation.
I am currently doing Sarsasparilla which Mo kindly recommended. Haven't noticed anything yet but it's early days.

My symptoms are always worse around my period. I went to the Lyme conference last weekend and sure enough, they said that is normal.
I thought they said that more estrogen weakens the immune system and that is why. But unfortunately I didn't write that down....and you know how our memory can be. : )

I recently began taking the pill because the pain was out of control when I had my period. It would set of a reaction in my body that lasted about two weeks.
I know many people on this board suggest not taking the pill, but it has made a huge difference in my life. And I always swore I would never take the pill.
My first 2 months on were absolutely horrendous. Then it evened out.

My Dr. warned me my symptoms might be worse around period. THis has proven to be true! Not sure of the connection but I have read articles about astham and allergies and headaches also worse during period. Might be same mechanism at work...
